🌊 Scattering Ashes at Sea in Portsmouth & the Solent - English Channel.
Choosing where to scatter a loved one’s ashes is a very personal decision. For many families, the sea offers a peaceful and meaningful place to say goodbye.
At Ashes At Sea, we provide private, family-attended ash scattering ceremonies from Gosport - Portsmouth, taking families into the Solent and English Channel to create a farewell that feels right for them.
There is no fixed format. Some families choose a few quiet words or a favourite piece of music, while others prefer a religious or non-religious ceremony. Some simply want time together on the water before gently placing the ashes into the sea.
We can also offer guidance on biodegradable water urns, flowers and the practical aspects of scattering ashes at sea.
Every service is private and individually arranged, giving families the time and space to remember someone important to them in their own way.

Ashes At Sea — Supporting Families With the Final Part of Saying Goodbye
Over the years, Amanda and I have had the privilege of helping many families with something that often comes some time after the funeral itself — deciding what to do with the ashes of someone they love.
For some families, scattering ashes at sea has always been the plan. For others, they simply know that the sea, or a particular place on the water held special meaning, but they aren't quite sure what is possible or how to arrange it.
That's where we can help.
Ashes At Sea provides private, individually arranged ash-scattering and memorial trips from Gosport into the Solent and surrounding waters aboard our own purpose-built vessel, DoinTheDo.
We don't believe something this personal should ever feel like a standard package.
Some families want a few quiet words. Others bring flowers, music or raise a glass. Some share stories and laughter alongside the tears, while others simply want a peaceful moment together on the water.
Our role is to listen, guide where needed, and give families the time and space to say goodbye in whatever way feels right for them.
Amanda and I have both experienced the loss of people very close to us. Perhaps that's why the compassion and patience families need at this stage doesn't feel like something we have to consciously provide — it simply comes naturally.
We have been incredibly fortunate to receive some wonderful Google reviews from families we've looked after. Some of the words people have written are so generous that Amanda and I occasionally look at each other and wonder whether they're really talking about us!
But those reviews mean an enormous amount because they're not advertising written by us. They're the experiences of families who have actually stepped aboard and entrusted us with someone precious to them.

For funeral directors: if you would like some information about Ashes At Sea to keep available for families who may ask you about scattering ashes at sea, please feel very welcome to send us a private message.
There is absolutely no obligation. We would simply like funeral directors to know that, should one of your families need this kind of service, there is a small, personal and experienced business they can speak to.
Sometimes the final part of saying goodbye deserves just as much thought, dignity and care as everything that came before it.

Sometimes the kindest words we receive are also the hardest to share.
A family who recently joined us for a private farewell on the Solent left a deeply moving review about their experience.
It was incredibly personal, so rather than reproduce the whole review, we wanted to share just a few of the words that meant so much to Amanda and me:
“At what was an incredibly emotional time for our family, their calm and caring nature made everything feel that little bit easier.”
And perhaps something that captures what we always hope to provide:
“Dave and Amanda seemed to understand instinctively when to help and when simply to give us privacy.”
The family also spoke about being able to play their loved one’s chosen music as they said their final farewell and committed their ashes to the sea — describing the moment as beautiful, peaceful and uniquely personal.
Those words stayed with us.
Every family, every person and every farewell is different. Some families choose music, flowers, prayers or readings. Others share memories together, and sometimes there are simply a few quiet moments looking out across the water.
There is no right or wrong way.
For us, the important thing is providing a peaceful and private place, giving families all the time they need, and quietly being there when help or guidance is wanted.
We are enormously grateful when a family takes the time afterwards to share something so personal. We never forget the trust that has been placed in us, and we never take the privilege of being part of these moments for granted.
💙💙 Dave and Amanda

What do you do with ashes after cremation?

It’s one of the questions many families quietly find themselves asking after saying goodbye to someone they love.

For some, the answer is keeping ashes close to home. For others, it may be finding a peaceful, meaningful place to return them to nature.

One option many families don’t realise is possible is placing ashes into the sea.

In the UK, no special permission is normally required to scatter cremated ashes at sea, although local guidance and bylaws should always be checked, as some areas such as harbours, marinas and enclosed waters may have restrictions.

Many families take comfort from choosing clean, open, free-flowing water, with space, privacy and time to say goodbye in their own way.

A farewell at sea can be:
🌸 flowers or petals placed gently on the water
🎵 favourite music, hymns or mantras played onboard
🙏 religious prayers or blessings
🕊️ a non-religious celebration of life
🤍 or simply a quiet, private moment together offshore

There is no single right way to say goodbye.

What matters is that it feels respectful, personal and right for the family.

For anyone wondering what to do with ashes after cremation, we have put together some helpful guidance here:

We’ve had the privilege of supporting many families across Portsmouth, Gosport and the wider Solent with the final part of their loved one’s journey — placing ashes into the sea.

For many, choosing a location is one of the most important decisions. Some families feel drawn to familiar places such as Stokes Bay, Lee-on-the-Solent or Hill Head, while others prefer the open waters of the Solent, Osborne Bay, or even near historic landmarks like the Solent Forts or the resting site of the Mary Rose.

Being out on the water offers a calm and peaceful setting — the sound of the tide, the open horizon, and the space to reflect can create a truly personal and meaningful farewell.

Every ceremony is different. Some are quiet and private, others include readings, flowers, or moments of reflection — always shaped by what feels right for each family.

If you’re wondering what to do with ashes after cremation, or simply want to understand your options locally, we’re always here to help, with no pressure.

Over time, we’ve had the privilege of supporting more Hindu families with the final part of their loved one’s journey — placing ashes into the sea.

For many, water holds deep spiritual meaning. While rivers such as the Ganges are traditionally chosen, some families find a similar sense of peace and connection in the open sea.

A quiet moment on the water, the sound of the tide, and the space to reflect can create a very personal and meaningful farewell.

Each ceremony is different — some guided by a priest, others kept simple and private — always shaped by what feels right for the family.

If you’re unsure what the options are, or simply want to understand how this can be done respectfully, we’re always here to help, with no pressure.

Every family comes to us with a different story. Some seek a peaceful ashes at sea ceremony, others a more traditional religious or non-religious farewell, and many choose a deeply symbolic Hindu scattering service on the water.

What unites them all is the need for a dignified, compassionate way to say goodbye. Out on the waves, time slows… there is space to breathe, reflect, and release.

We’ve been humbled by the kind words left in our Google reviews. Families have described their experience with us as:

“Caring, respectful and deeply personal.”

“The most peaceful way we could imagine saying goodbye.”

“Handled with compassion from start to finish.”

If you’d like to hear more directly from the families we’ve supported, you’ll find their stories on our Google Reviews Page https://share.google/RLX6bgYubLZDm71RL

These reflections mean so much, because our role is not just to guide a ceremony, but to hold a safe and gentle space in which loved ones can find comfort.

Whether it’s a simple non-religious scattering of ashes, a carefully observed faith-based ceremony, or a Hindu ritual with prayer and offerings, each journey is shaped with care.

Over the past few weeks, we've had the honour of helping several Hindu families with the final part of their loved one's journey — placing the ashes into the sea.

While many traditionally place ashes in a river, some families are drawn to the calm and vastness of the ocean for a more peaceful farewell. Whether it’s for spiritual reasons, connection to the elements, or just the simplicity of nature, scattering ashes at sea has become a meaningful choice for many.

At Ashes at Sea – Gosport, we’ve supported both quiet, family-only ceremonies and services where a Hindu priest was present to perform final rites. It really depends on what feels right for each family.

If you're searching for where to place ashes in water — or specifically how to carry out a Hindu sea scattering ceremony — feel free to reach out. We’re always happy to advise gently, with no pressure.

A Peaceful Sikh Ash Scattering at Sea

Recently, we had the privilege of supporting a Sikh family from South Essex / East London in honouring their loved one with an Ash Scattering Ceremony at Sea.

Guided by a Sikh priest and traditional prayers, the ceremony took place on the calm, clear waters off the South Coast — an area the family specifically chose for its purity and tranquility, reflecting the dignity and spiritual importance of the occasion.

Scattering Ashes At Sea is a deeply personal farewell. It can offer a meaningful, peaceful setting for families of all faiths and beliefs — including Sikh, Hindu, Christian, and Non-Religious — to honour their loved ones in nature’s embrace.

If you're considering this kind of final tribute, we’re here to help you create a respectful and serene experience.
