TRO’s top tip for Thursday is concerning tyre pressures - we recommend checking tyre pressures between services, it is a known fact that they can and do naturally lose around 10 to 15 PSI per year.
Under-inflated trailer tyres run hot, flex too much ( not nice for your horses journey ) , and cause dangerous blowouts ( even worse ). Unlike car tyres where you might adjust pressure for comfort, trailer tyres generally need to be inflated to the maximum cold PSI listed on the tyre sidewall. Because trailer tyres look almost identical even when 10 PSI low, visual checks do not work.
Risks of Under-Inflation
Excessive heat: Sidewalls move too much, building up high internal temperatures that break down the tyre bonds potentially leading to tyre failure at the worst possible time
Sudden blowouts: Heat and stress cause catastrophic failures, often with no visible warning beforehand.
Uneven wear: The edges of the tread wear out much faster than the center
A typical Ifor Williams horse trailer requires 65PSI as per the guidelines often stuck to the inside of the grooms door, not the 40 odd PSI as in the pictures
