It’s Monday and the Volvos are here…
…but so are the Fords, Vauxhalls, BMWs and a couple of camper vans.
Our pit is big enough to take campers for servicing, MOTs and repairs — we work on the lot.

Fun Fact Friday:
The very first Volvo ever built was the ÖV 4 “Jakob”, back in April 1927.
It had 28 horsepower, three gears, and absolutely no idea it would one day be followed by cars with more warning lights than a Christmas tree.

🧠🔧 Fun Fact Friday – Volvo Nerd Edition
Ever wondered what T2 / T3 / T4 / T5 / T6 actually mean on a Volvo?

They’re not engine sizes — they’re power levels.

T2/T3 → Same 2.0 engine, lower boost

T4 → Same engine, more boost + sharper mapping

T5 → The quick one (older models had the 5‑cyl legend)

T6 → Turbo + supercharger on newer models = instant torque

Most modern T‑engines are literally the same 2.0 block, just tuned differently.
Volvo kept it simple… by making it complicated.

Happy Friday from your local Volvo nerds at Swallows Volvo Specialist 🛠️💙

🧠🔧 Fun Fact Friday – Volvo Nerd Edition
Fun fact: On many Volvo 5‑cylinder diesels (D3/D4/D5), the engine’s iconic “warble” isn’t just the cylinder layout — it’s heavily influenced by the variable geometry turbo (VNT) control strategy.

Volvo’s ECU constantly adjusts the turbo vane position based on:

Exhaust pulse timing

Load request

Atmospheric pressure

Intake temperature

EGR flow rate

And even altitude

The result?
That smooth, slightly off‑beat 5‑cyl soundtrack that Volvo fans can identify from a car park away.

Even better: the VNT system is so finely tuned that a tiny vacuum leak, sticky actuator, or lazy boost control solenoid can change the engine note before it even throws a fault code.
Volvos don’t just talk — they sing diagnostics if you know what you’re listening for.

Happy Friday from Swallows Volvo Specialist, where we proudly speak fluent Volvo 🛠️💙

🌬️ Volvo Swirl Flaps – The Common Issues Explained
If you drive a diesel Volvo (especially D5, D3, D4 engines), you might have heard the term “swirl flaps” thrown around. They’re part of the intake system and help the engine run smoothly and efficiently… until they don’t.

Here are the most common swirl‑flap‑related problems we see in the workshop:

🔧 1. Broken Swirl Arm / Linkage
The little plastic arm that connects the swirl flaps to the actuator loves to pop off or snap.
Symptoms:

Hesitation

Rough running

Engine light

Reduced performance

⚠️ 2. Sticking or Jammed Swirl Flaps
Carbon build‑up can cause the flaps to stick.
Symptoms:

Poor fuel economy

Flat spots in acceleration

Inconsistent idle

💡 3. Actuator Motor Issues
Sometimes the motor that controls the flaps fails.
Symptoms:

“Engine System Service Required” message

Loss of low‑end torque

Fault codes relating to intake runner control

🛠️ 4. Wear on the Swirl Shaft Itself
On higher‑mileage cars, the shaft can wear, causing air leaks and poor running.

✔️ What we can do at the garage
At Swallows Volvo Specialist, we can:

Diagnose swirl flap faults properly (not guesswork)

Replace broken arms or linkages

Clean or free off sticking flaps

Replace the actuator if needed

Advise on long‑term solutions for high‑mileage engines

Swirl flap issues are common on certain Volvo diesels, but they’re very fixable once you know what you’re dealing with.

📱 Volvo “On Call Service Due” – What It Can Actually Mean
If your Volvo has flashed up ‘On Call Service Required’ or ‘On Call Service Due’, it isn’t always about the app subscription. Sometimes it’s simply the On Call backup battery reaching the end of its life.

🔍 Two common reasons this message appears
1️⃣ Subscription / telematics service due

The Volvo On Call system needs its annual update

Remote features (app, lock/unlock, pre‑heat) may pause until it’s renewed

2️⃣ The On Call backup battery is low

This is the small internal battery inside the telematics unit

It powers emergency functions if the main battery is disconnected

Over time, it naturally wears out and needs replacing

When it gets weak, the car throws the “service required” message

🛠️ What we can do at the garage
At Swallows Volvo Specialist, we can:

Read the codes and confirm which version of the message you’ve got

Check the health of the On Call backup battery

Replace the battery if needed

Reset the message once everything’s sorted

Point you in the right direction if it’s subscription‑related instead

No drama, no guesswork — just a quick check to get your Volvo happy again.

If your dash has lit up with the On Call warning, drop us a message and we’ll take a look.

🚗 Fun Fact Friday – Only Volvo Would Think of This
Did you know…
Volvo once designed a pedestrian airbag on the outside of the car?

Yes.
Only Volvo looked at the front of a vehicle and thought:

“Hmm… what if we made this safer for the people we might accidentally hit?”

So the Volvo V40 was fitted with an airbag that pops out from under the bonnet, lifts it up, and cushions the windscreen area — all to protect pedestrians in a collision.

Because while other manufacturers were adding bigger grilles and louder exhausts, Volvo was out here inventing airbags for people not even in the car.

Peak Volvo energy.

Happy Fun Fact Friday from Swallows Volvo 😄💛
