Our photo for a Friday! This one takes us back to August 2016 when the Cardiff Mini Club staged an event in Cardiff Bay outside the Wales Millennium Centre. There were so many fantastic classic Minis and Mini Coopers.

Here is a little bit of automotive design history! The DB6 was the first Aston Martin model tested in a wind tunnel, which led to its controversial "Kammback" tail—a sawn-off aerodynamic lip that reduced rear lift by over 30 percent but offended traditional buyers.

The Aston Martin DB6 was launched in 1965 and, as with all previous cars, they turned to SMITHS to design and manufacture the instrumentation.

The debut vehicle from RBW Electric Vehicles was the amazing EV Roadster which was unveiled in 2020. This was immediately identified as something special, with James May outspoken in favour of the move away from classic combustion engine cars to electric and hydrogen powered vehicles. The EV Roadster was inspired by the iconic MG of the 1960s and 70s equipped with the latest EV technologies. We, at CAI, were thrilled to be involved designing and building the instruments.

Did you know that the first vehicle to have a tachometer fitted was a locomotive in 1840? The exact first passenger car to feature a factory-installed tachometer (rev-counter) is historically undocumented or debated. From the 1930s through to the 1950s, dashboards began featuring instrument clusters, with tachometers appearing primarily in dedicated racing cars and select high-end sports cars before becoming mainstream during the post-war performance boom of the 1950s/1960s.

We look back at the history of the tachometer >>> https://www.smiths-instruments.co.uk/the-history-of-the-tachometer/

The first Tachometer is widely considered to have been developed by the German engineer, Dietrich Uhlhorn in 1817. Uhlhorn needed a gauge to measure the speed of machines. Little did he know that within 200 years this simple device was going to be a standard feature on vehicles driving in every cont...

The exact total number of classic air-cooled Volkswagen Beetles currently on the road across all of Europe is not tracked by a single centralised authority, but national registration data and historical estimates suggest there are likely to be hundreds of thousands still active. Simply astounding statistics for a true classic.

By supplying replacement gauges, such as speedometers and tachometers, we hope to help keep those classic VW Beetles on the road.

Carroll Shelby was an American automotive designer, racing driver, and entrepreneur and the inspiration behind the AC Cobra racing car. The car's racing pedigree is exceptional. In 1965, the AC Shelby Cobra Daytona won the over 2000cc division of the World Sportscar Championship, pushing Ferrari into second place and Austin Healey into 3rd. Shelby had come 2nd in 1964 and 3rd in 1963.

At Le Mans 24 Hours, the AC Cobra secured 7th place in 1963, 4th in 1964, and 8th in 1965.

And the popularity of original and replica AC Cobra cars continues.

Over the years there have been some weird and wonderful dashboards, like this Aston Martin Lagonda from the early 1980s. However, the demand for classically styled gauges continues, especially from builders of specialist combustion and electric driven cars. Many of these gauges function using the latest digital technology, but retain that classic speedometer or tachometer appearance. And so why do these specialist car enthusiasts want traditional gauges? Is it just nostalgia or something else?
