Five Things That Will Void Your Car Insurance Without You Realising

Car insurance is one of those things most drivers think they understand β€” until a claim is rejected on grounds they did not know existed. Here are five common situations that can invalidate your cover.
1. Modifications you have not declared. Alloy wheels, tinted windows, performance parts, a tow bar β€” any modification to your vehicle should be declared to your insurer. Non-declaration can void your policy entirely.
2. Incorrect use description. If your policy covers social and domestic use and you use the car for commuting, or vice versa, you may not be covered.
3. An unroadworthy vehicle. If your car is involved in an accident and is found to have defective brakes, illegal tyres, or other dangerous faults, your insurer may refuse to pay.
4. Letting someone else drive without checking their cover. Many policies allow named drivers only β€” allowing an unlisted driver to use the car may void cover for that journey.
5. Leaving the car running unattended. Leaving a car running and unattended β€” to defrost, for example β€” is both illegal and likely to void your theft cover if the vehicle is stolen.
Keeping your vehicle properly maintained is one of the most reliable ways to ensure your insurance remains valid. At Brookes Auto Repair, we keep your car roadworthy and your peace of mind intact.

What Happens If You Ignore Your Power Steering?

Power steering is one of those systems that most drivers take completely for granted β€” until it stops working. At that point, steering a modern car becomes a significant physical effort, particularly at low speeds and when manoeuvring.
But beyond the sudden failure scenario, power steering systems give plenty of warning signs that something is developing. Knowing what to look for means you can address issues before they become emergencies.
A whining or moaning noise when turning the wheel β€” particularly at low speed or when fully turned β€” is one of the most common indicators of low power steering fluid or a developing pump problem.
Stiff or heavy steering that requires more effort than usual suggests fluid loss or a weakening pump.
A vibration or shudder through the steering wheel when turning can indicate air in the hydraulic system or a failing pump.
Fluid on the ground beneath the front of the car β€” usually a clear to light brown fluid β€” may indicate a power steering leak from a hose, pipe, or the rack itself.
Electric power steering systems β€” increasingly common on modern vehicles β€” have fewer fluid-related failure modes but can develop faults in the motor or control unit that produce similar symptoms.
Contact Brookes Auto Repair at brookesautorepair.com if you are experiencing any of the above.

The School Run Is One of the Hardest Things Your Car Does.

It does not look dramatic. A few miles each morning, a few miles each afternoon, five days a week, most of the year.
But the school run is one of the most demanding uses of a family car. Short trips mean the engine rarely reaches full operating temperature β€” which is when it runs most efficiently, burns fuel most cleanly, and lubricates most effectively. Cold starts followed by short journeys cause disproportionate wear on engine components and accelerate the degradation of engine oil.
Stop-start urban driving is also hard on brakes, clutch, and transmission components. And carrying passengers regularly means your tyres, suspension, and brakes are consistently working at a higher load than they would be with a single driver.
None of this means the school run is bad for your car β€” it is just a use pattern that warrants attentive maintenance. More frequent oil changes, attentive tyre monitoring, and keeping an eye on brake wear are all worthwhile habits for drivers who cover predominantly short urban journeys.
At Brookes Auto Repair, we are happy to advise on the most appropriate service interval for your driving pattern. Visit brookesautorepair.com to get in touch.

How Many Miles Has Your Spare Tyre Done? You Might Be Surprised.

Most drivers have never thought about the spare tyre sitting in the boot of their car. It came with the vehicle, it has never been used, and it is therefore assumed to be fine.
But rubber ages regardless of mileage. A spare tyre that has never touched the road but is ten years old may be significantly compromised β€” the rubber hardens and becomes brittle, reducing grip and increasing the risk of failure under load.
Beyond age, it is worth checking that your spare is inflated to the correct pressure. A flat or low spare is useless at the roadside, which is precisely when you need it most.
And if your vehicle is fitted with a temporary space-saver spare β€” the narrow, smaller wheel found in many modern cars β€” you should know that these are limited to a maximum of 50mph and should only be driven on for long enough to reach a tyre specialist.
When did you last check yours? Pull it out, have a look at the date code on the sidewall, check the pressure, and inspect the tread. It takes five minutes and could save a roadside emergency.
At Brookes Auto Repair, we check spare tyre condition as part of our vehicle health check. Book yours at brookesautorepair.com

Your Exhaust Is Telling You Something. Are You Listening?

Most drivers tune out the sounds their car makes β€” until the noise becomes impossible to ignore. But your exhaust is one of the most communicative parts of your vehicle, and paying attention to what it is doing can prevent a minor issue from becoming a major repair.
A deep rumbling or rattling underneath the car often indicates a loose or broken exhaust bracket or heat shield β€” usually inexpensive to fix.
A hissing sound, particularly when accelerating, can point to a crack or hole in the exhaust manifold or downpipe β€” worth addressing promptly before it worsens.
A blowing sound from the front of the exhaust system may indicate a failing gasket between the manifold and the cylinder head.
Excessive smoke from the exhaust β€” particularly blue or white smoke β€” points to engine issues that require investigation beyond the exhaust system itself.
And if your exhaust has simply become louder over time without any obvious cause, corrosion has likely created a hole somewhere in the system.
At Brookes Auto Repair, we carry out exhaust inspections, repairs, and replacements on all makes and models. If yours has been trying to tell you something, now is the time to listen.
