The School Run Is One of the Hardest Things Your Car Does.

It does not look dramatic. A few miles each morning, a few miles each afternoon, five days a week, most of the year.
But the school run is one of the most demanding uses of a family car. Short trips mean the engine rarely reaches full operating temperature — which is when it runs most efficiently, burns fuel most cleanly, and lubricates most effectively. Cold starts followed by short journeys cause disproportionate wear on engine components and accelerate the degradation of engine oil.
Stop-start urban driving is also hard on brakes, clutch, and transmission components. And carrying passengers regularly means your tyres, suspension, and brakes are consistently working at a higher load than they would be with a single driver.

How Many Miles Has Your Spare Tyre Done? You Might Be Surprised.

Most drivers have never thought about the spare tyre sitting in the boot of their car. It came with the vehicle, it has never been used, and it is therefore assumed to be fine.
But rubber ages regardless of mileage. A spare tyre that has never touched the road but is ten years old may be significantly compromised — the rubber hardens and becomes brittle, reducing grip and increasing the risk of failure under load.
Beyond age, it is worth checking that your spare is inflated to the correct pressure. A flat or low spare is useless at the roadside, which is precisely when you need it most.
And if your vehicle is fitted with a temporary space-saver spare — the narrow, smaller wheel found in many modern cars — you should know that these are limited to a maximum of 50mph and should only be driven on for long enough to reach a tyre specialist.
When did you last check yours? Pull it out, have a look at the date code on the sidewall, check the pressure, and inspect the tread. It takes five minutes and could save a roadside emergency.

Your Exhaust Is Telling You Something. Are You Listening?

Most drivers tune out the sounds their car makes — until the noise becomes impossible to ignore. But your exhaust is one of the most communicative parts of your vehicle, and paying attention to what it is doing can prevent a minor issue from becoming a major repair.
A deep rumbling or rattling underneath the car often indicates a loose or broken exhaust bracket or heat shield — usually inexpensive to fix.
A hissing sound, particularly when accelerating, can point to a crack or hole in the exhaust manifold or downpipe — worth addressing promptly before it worsens.
A blowing sound from the front of the exhaust system may indicate a failing gasket between the manifold and the cylinder head.
