The RORC Rating Office in Lymington administers the two most popular rating systems used in UK yacht racing: the RYA’s Yacht Time Correction (YTC) system and the internationally recognised IRC Rating rule.

For many sailors, YTC is the first step beyond local handicap racing, while IRC opens the door to a wider range of competitive opportunities. In an article published in the October issue of All At Sea, Jenny Howells, Technical Manager at RORC Rating Office, explains the role of YTC and looks at when it may be time to raise your sights from YTC to IRC.

The 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗚𝗕𝗥 𝗜𝗥𝗖 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 at Dartmouth Royal Regatta Sailing Week delivered plenty of challenges, with strong winds and tough sea conditions testing competitors throughout the event, held over 4 days at the end of August. Despite the conditions, organisers and competitors completed a seven-race championship series for the 39 boats competing across five IRC classes in Start Bay.

Congratulations to 𝘌𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘈𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯 (Claire and Ed Mockridge), winners of IRC 3 and the overall 2026 GBR IRC National Championship. 𝘓𝘦𝘰𝘯 (David Franks) and 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘵 (Simon Patterson) completed the championship podium. Prizes were generously provided by North Sails.

Congratulations all the competitors, race officials and volunteers who helped deliver a successful championship despite the challenging conditions.

The countdown is on... Dartmouth Royal Regatta Sailing Week and the GBR IRC Rating Nationals are now just over two weeks away - and things are shaping up beautifully. If entering has been sitting on your "must do" list, now's the moment: get your entry in ASAP so we can lock down the class splits and give you the closest racing possible.

👉 Enter here https://webcollect.org.uk/dartmouthsailingweek

Start Bay is ready and waiting. Expect tight racing on the water and plenty of buzz ashore each evening to keep the crew smiling long after the sails come down.

And the prizes? Rather good, actually. The GBR IRC Nationals prizes come courtesy of North Sails, and there are fleet trophies up for grabs alongside bottles of gin from Salcombe Distilling - because winning tastes even better.

A few more reasons to keep your eyes peeled:
🥃 Sail fast on Ancasta Race Day! Ancasta are laying on Jugs of Dark & Stormy for the class winners - made with Goslings Rum - so there's every reason to push hard for the front of the fleet.
🍸 Salcombe Gin & Tonic deliveries Thursday through Saturday - watch out for our competition announcement on each of those days for your chance to bag one.
🎆 A spectacular firework display on Saturday evening to light up the bay.

We can't wait to welcome you to Dartmouth. See you on the start line!

Huge congratulations to our colleague Sally Moss, part of the winning crew aboard the 1978 Nordic Folkboat TATTARAT in this year’s Round the Island Race! 🏆

Sally and her husband, Simon, own TATTARAT and raced with fellow crew members Cy Grisley and Matthew Wright. Together, they delivered an outstanding performance to win the prestigious Gold Roman Bowl for best corrected time under IRC Rating.

Reflecting on the victory after the race, Simon said what made the achievement even more special was sharing it with family and friends, a sentiment that perfectly captures the teamwork, trust and enjoyment at the heart of their success.

Everyone at the RORC Rating Office is incredibly proud of Sally and delighted for the entire TATTARAT crew on winning one of the UK’s most iconic yacht races. We know that there will be extended and very well-deserved celebrations!
