There is a particular joy that Sardinia in June produces that we find very difficult to describe to people who haven't experienced it.

It's not just the beauty, though the beauty is extraordinary.

It's the combination - warm sun and cool shade, hot granite and cold water, the smell of the maquis coming off the hillsides and the salt of the sea just below the boat.

It's the way a morning at anchor feels unhurried in a way that no hotel room ever does.

Our guests are experiencing all of it right now. The weather is perfect. The coast is stunning. The food and wine are delicious.

The wine last night was Vermentino di Gallura - Sardinia's finest white, grown on the granite slopes of the north of the island, poured in a harbour restaurant so small it had no name on the door, chosen by a waiter who had known the winemaker since childhood.

The fish had been landed that morning in the same harbour.

The grappa afterwards - Sardinian, herbal, assertively strong - was not requested. It arrived anyway, as it tends to on the best evenings in Italy.

No package holiday has ever produced an evening like this. None ever will. Because this kind of evening doesn't come from a brochure. It comes from knowing where to go, who to talk to and when to let the evening happen.

David and Matthew have been building that knowledge for years - and since founding Escape Yachting in 2010, sharing it with their guests.

We dream about British Columbia in Canada.

We are not exaggerating. The waters off Vancouver, the entrance to Desolation Sound, the channels of the Inside Passage threading between mountains that drop straight into the sea - these are places that stay with you in a way that most destinations simply don't.

David has sailed these waters and describes the experience of rounding a headland into a new fjord as "like a David Attenborough film, except you're in it."

Orca pods working the channel. Humpbacks surfacing close enough to hear them breathe. Grizzlies on the tideline at low water. Bald eagles on every second tree.

Nothing compares. The scenery is breathtaking. The wildlife is astonishing. The peacefulness, the hiking, the sense of exploration - this is what a trip of a lifetime actually feels like.

We are in Sardinia this week and we have run out of superlatives.

Our guests arrived excited. Within 24 hours they were something beyond excited - that quieter, deeper state that happens when a place exceeds every expectation you brought to it.

The coast is extraordinary. The Maddalena Archipelago in June is the Mediterranean at its most pristine - national park-protected anchorages, water of a colour that doesn't have a name in English and not a cruise ship or a beach club in sight.

The food and wine last night in a small harbour restaurant on La Maddalena island was the kind of meal people still talk about years later.

The swim off the back of the yacht this morning, in water so clear you could see the anchor on the seabed 12 metres down, was the kind of swim that makes every other swim feel slightly insufficient.

This is what we do.
