PLENTY OF TREAD DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN A TYRE IS SAFE.

It’s easy to look at the tread and assume your tyres have plenty of life left, but age and condition matter too.

Over time, rubber can deteriorate even when a vehicle isn’t covering many miles. Look out for:

✓ Cracking or crazing in the sidewall
✓ Bulges, cuts or other visible damage
✓ Rubber becoming hard or brittle
✓ Uneven wear
✓ Tyres that are getting on in age despite good tread depth

Got a puncture? Don't assume you need a new tyre.

Not every puncture means replacing the tyre. Whether it can be safely repaired depends on where the damage is, its size and the condition of the tyre.

Under British Standard BS AU 159, a puncture can usually be repaired if:

✓ The damage is within the central three-quarters of the tread
✓ The puncture is 6mm or smaller
✓ The tyre has not been driven on while flat or seriously underinflated
✓ There is no structural damage found during an internal inspection
✓ There isn't an existing repair in the same area

A tyre cannot usually be repaired if:

✗ The damage is in the sidewall or shoulder
✗ The puncture is larger than 6mm
✗ The tyre has been driven on while flat, causing internal damage
✗ There are cuts, bulges or exposed cords
✗ The tyre has suffered other structural damage

The only way to know for certain is with a proper internal inspection. If you've picked up a puncture, don't guess. Book it with us and we'll advise whether a safe repair is possible or if a replacement is the only option.
