With the fuel crisis that has swept the country over the weekend, you may have found it difficult to find fuel to fill up your car. β½οΈ
If you are nearing that dreaded red line, here are 5 tips to help you save some of those precious drops of fuel.
1 - Tighten Your Fuel Cap π
This may sound ridiculous, as tightening a fuel cap is something you do every time you fill up, but keep reading. Like all liquids, Petrol will start to evaporate when it is hot. Making sure that the fuel cap is fully air-tight will prevent any vapours from leaving the fuel tank.
2 - Keep Your Windows Closed π
The aerodynamics of your car have a great effect on the amount of fuel consumption. With the windows wound up, the car produces less drag, making it slip through the air better. This requires less work from the engine, improving fuel economy.
3 - Travel Light β¬οΈ
Weight is another killer of fuel economy. As such, try to travel with as little in the car as possible. Remove those golf clubs from the boot or take off the roof rack if you don't need to use it. All of these items add weight to your car, increasing the amount of fuel that you use.
4 - Keep Tyres Inflated π¨
Though it is important to always have the correct air pressure in your tyres, having properly inflated tyres will help to reduce the rolling resistance. According to the AA, rolling resistance accounts for 15% of fuel consumption. So if your tyres are too low, you will be using more fuel.
5 - Don't Idle ππππ
Owners of cars fitted with Stop-Start technology will not need to worry about this, but for those without, try not to remain at idle for too long. If you are likely to be sat stationary for more than 1 minute, it is better for fuel economy to switch the engine off until you need to pull away again. Not only will it help to save fuel, it will also save the environment by reducing emissions.
