Tomorrow is Halloween, and it can be a tricky night for new drivers. Kids in dark costumes are hard to see and may dart out between parked cars, so drive slowly through neighborhoods, skip the phone entirely and keep your headlights on.

Thank you for following our New Drivers in the House series this month. If there is a new driver in your family, we are here to help keep their car safe and reliable for years to come. Our shop is closed this weekend, so call us today if you need anything before next week. Call our team at (918) 838-0892 or visit johnstonautorepair.com.

Myth. With anti-lock brakes, press the pedal down firmly and hold it while you steer, and let the system do the pumping for you. You may feel the pedal pulse, which is normal. Questions about your brakes? Call our team at (918) 838-0892.

Daylight saving time ends this Sunday, November 1, which means more new drivers will be heading home after dark. Night driving is harder for everyone, but especially for drivers who have not done much of it.

Make sure both headlights work and the lenses are clear, not cloudy or yellow. Teach your new driver when to use high beams and when to switch them off for oncoming traffic. Remember too that Oklahoma's intermediate license limits nighttime driving, so check the current hours with your teen before the evenings get darker. Call our team at (918) 838-0892 or visit johnstonautorepair.com.

Myth or fact: In a car with anti-lock brakes, you should pump the brake pedal during an emergency stop. Comment MYTH or FACT, and we will post the answer tomorrow at noon.

We have been taking care of Tulsa families and their cars since 1985, and many of the new drivers we see today are the kids and grandkids of longtime customers. That is one of our favorite parts of being a family-owned shop.

Our ASE certified technicians work on foreign and domestic cars and trucks, including diesels. As a NAPA AutoCare Center, qualifying repairs come with a 24-month, 24,000-mile warranty on parts and labor that is honored nationwide, which is a real comfort when a new driver heads off to college or out of town. Call our team at (918) 838-0892 or visit johnstonautorepair.com.

Car Care 101 lesson five sounds simple, but plenty of new drivers have never done it alone, and that is filling up the tank. Look at the small arrow next to the fuel symbol on the gauge, because it points to the side of the car where the fuel door is.

Check the owner's manual for the right fuel grade, turn the engine off before you pump and never let the tank run close to empty. Running the car very low on fuel can leave you stranded and may be hard on the fuel pump. Keeping it above a quarter tank is a good habit for any new driver. Now that Teen Driver Safety Week has wrapped up, here is one of the most useful tools for parents. NHTSA encourages families to write a parent-teen driving agreement that spells out the rules and what happens if they are broken.

A good agreement covers seat belts, phone use, passengers, curfew, speeding and who pays for gas and maintenance. It can also include the promise that a teen can always call for a ride. Writing it down together makes expectations clear, and you can loosen the rules as your driver earns more experience. Call our team at (918) 838-0892 or visit johnstonautorepair.com.

The last two of NHTSA's five rules are about the people in the car and the choices behind the wheel. Every extra teen passenger adds distraction, which is why Oklahoma's intermediate license limits how many passengers a new driver can carry.

NHTSA also reports that in 2024, 22 percent of teen drivers involved in fatal crashes had been drinking, even though they were too young to legally buy alcohol. Parents, make sure your teen knows they can always call you for a ride, with no lecture that night. Our shop is closed this weekend, so call today if you need us. Myth. Safety experts, including NHTSA, now recommend holding the wheel closer to 9 and 3, which keeps arms out of the path of a deploying airbag and gives good control. Share that tip with the new driver in your house, and call our team at (918) 838-0892 for car care.

Speeding is another of NHTSA's five rules for teen drivers, and the numbers show why. In 2024, speeding was a factor for 33 percent of the teen drivers of passenger vehicles involved in fatal crashes.

New drivers are still learning how long it takes to stop and how quickly traffic can change, and extra speed leaves less room for mistakes. Leaving a few minutes early takes away the temptation to hurry. On busy Tulsa roads and highways, keeping a safe following distance matters just as much as watching the speedometer.
