This is going to come as a bit of a shock to some of you who have followed this page and Delta V over the years, but I wanted to share the news sooner rather than later.
At the end of this year, we will officially be closing our Vintage VW department.
We currently have a backlog of vintage cars here, and our focus between now and the end of the year will be getting through as many of those commitments as we reasonably can.
This was not an easy decision, and it's one I've been thinking about since the middle of last year. Unfortunately, I've reached the point where I simply can't justify continuing the department.
The reality of working on these cars has changed. Parts quality and availability aren't what they once were, and we're dealing with vehicles that are now 50+ years old. Aging wiring, previous repairs, modifications, accident damage and decades of unknown history can turn what should be a relatively straightforward repair into something much larger.
We've increasingly found ourselves spending considerably more time on these cars than we could ever reasonably charge a customer for. More importantly, it has become harder for us to consistently provide the finished product that we expect from ourselves while still meeting the expectations of our customers.
And that's ultimately what made the decision for me.
The difficult part is the people.
I've made some great friends through the vintage side of Delta V and heard some incredible stories about these cars and what they mean to their owners. They've also been a huge part of the personality of our shop. Almost anyone who has walked through our doors over the years has stopped to look at whatever old VW happened to be sitting in the shop.
I know this decision may put some of our longtime vintage customers in a difficult position, and I don't take that lightly. I'm working on finding shops or individuals who may be able to pick up where we're leaving off. But I also won't recommend someone simply for the sake of having somewhere to send people. If I put Delta V's name behind a recommendation, I want to feel confident that our customers will be taken care of.
To everyone who has trusted us with their Beetles, Buses, Ghias, Things, Vanagons and other vintage VWs over the years — thank you.
It's been a memorable part of Delta V's story, and I'm incredibly grateful we got to be part of yours.
