This customer brought their bike in for a crank rebuild simply because of the engine hours. During teardown, this is what we found.

The rod had no up-and-down play and was still within spec for side clearance, but that doesn’t always mean it’s healthy.

The thrust washers had already started wearing grooves into the crank pin. These washers don’t just control side clearance—they keep the connecting rod properly centered on the crank pin. Once the pin starts grooving, the wear accelerates, the load on the big-end bearing becomes uneven, and what looks like a perfectly usable crank can quickly become a ticking time bomb.

This is why we inspect every component instead of relying solely on factory specifications. Preventing a catastrophic bottom-end failure is always cheaper than repairing one!
