The 1948 Tucker was decades ahead of its time, and fewer than 50 are left. This is Tucker #1023, one that didn't survive.

It was finished at the Tucker plant in Chicago on September 15, 1948, in Royal Maroon, one of only two Tuckers built without interior door buttons. After the company's bankruptcy auction in October 1950 it changed hands, and from 1966 to 1974 it sat in a shed in Ocala, Florida. In 1974 it went to Orange Park, Florida, to be worked on, and in 1975 it was moved into a warehouse in DeLand, Florida.

In the late 1970s, the warehouse burned. What was left of #1023 was crushed. A few parts were saved.

These photos are from our family's archive: the car in black and white, the color pictures from 1974, and the last ones, after the fire. This one was lost.

Not every Tucker survived. Tucker #1023 was finished in Chicago on September 15, 1948. Why does this 1948 Tucker have three headlights? The center one turns with the steering wheel. Up close with Tucker #1051 on the streets of Manhattan on Saturday: a 7 am walk-around in SoHo, the engine idling (it's in the back), and a pass on the cobbles at dawn. Fewer than 50 Tuckers exist. "Hey, can I take a picture?" We heard it all day. A stranger at the Western Union building in Tribeca asked, then leaned on the fender and posed. Under the Staple Street skybridge it was "You mind if we take a picture with it?" The NYPD came over at Washington Square for a look at the engine, and in the West Village a bride and groom stopped for photos. Fewer than 50 Tuckers exist. You said we were insane to drive a car this rare through Manhattan. Fair. Bugatti built 500 Chirons. Fewer than 50 Tuckers exist. On Saturday we and co-owner Rob Ida drove Tucker #1051 through the city anyway: the Washington Square Arch, a Tribeca crosswalk with yellow cabs on both sides and a stop in the West Village, after a morning at Cars & Coffee x Retromobile NYC on Greene St in SoHo. This car sat hidden in a New Jersey garage for years. It was due for a day out. Links in the first comment.
