1962 Volkswagen Beetle 1200 – NZ NEW – 2 OWNERS – EXTRAORDINARY HISTORY
In 30 years of buying, selling and collecting old cars, this is quite simply the best Beetle I have ever owned.
This is a genuine 1962 Volkswagen Beetle 1200, New Zealand New, and its history and condition are something we simply don’t come across anymore.
Just TWO owners from brand new. Both owners were from Oxford, Canterbury, and were friends. The first owner purchased the Beetle brand new in 1962 and kept it for around 40 years before passing it on to her friend in the early 2000s. She has owned and cared for it ever since.
Even better, the car comes with an incredible history file, including service records, receipts and documentation dating right back to 1963. The original VW Motors (NZ) Ltd Christchurch wallet and period books are still with the car. This isn’t a Beetle with a story that’s been pieced together — the history is there with it.
The condition underneath and throughout is what really sets this car apart. It is the driest Beetle I have ever seen. There is no rust, and we’re told it has never been left outside in the rain and has been garaged throughout its life. Anyone who knows early Beetles will understand just how exceptional that is.
It remains beautifully honest and wonderfully original in appearance, right down to the period details, steel wheels and hubcaps, chrome work, simple 1200 interior and fantastic pale green colour. It hasn’t been turned into something it was never meant to be —
There are plenty of restored Beetles around. There are plenty that have changed hands countless times, had rust repairs, replacement interiors, colour changes and lost their history along the way.
This is different.
Two owners. New Zealand New. More than six decades of documented history. Remarkably dry and incredibly well preserved.
If you have been waiting for the right early Beetle rather than simply another Beetle, I genuinely believe this is the one.
We will not get another opportunity like this.
It is priced to sell, and for someone wanting one of the best, most honest and best-documented early NZ-new Beetles we have come across, it deserves serious consideration.
