Queenstown’s recent floods and storm caused more than just a mess - they brought the region to a standstill. Slips, washouts and road closures turned simple trips into long waits while crews worked around the clock to clear debris and reopen key routes.

We post a lot about cars at Waimak Valuations - but this week was a reminder that none of it matters without the roads beneath them.

Infrastructure keeps communities moving. When the roads go down, everything slows with them. Massive respect to the teams who battled rough conditions to get Queenstown connected again.

Hoping everyone affected by the floods and slips pulls through - thankyou to all the crews and emergency services who helped clear the debris swiftly.

Some cars just belong in the landscape. 💛

A great drive through the Queenstown surrounds in this stunning C6 Corvette, with an incredible rocky backdrop to match.

Powered by the 6.0L LS2 V8, the C6 Corvette produces around 400 hp (298 kW) and 400 lb-ft of torque, making it a seriously capable grand tourer while still being raw enough to remind you why Corvettes are so much fun.

Good roads, a V8 and scenery like this - not a bad way to spend an afternoon. 🇳🇿🏔️

A few days ago, we talked about the strong JDM presence in New Zealand and how these cars shaped our upbringing, our childhoods, and our taste in cars today.

This beautiful example isn’t just another Honda City - it was my very first car! It sparked my love for Japanese engineering and the precision that still defines the JDM scene today.

New Zealand’s classic car economy is a powerhouse and the numbers behind this economy are staggering.

The 2024 national survey shows the historic & classic vehicle sector contributes an incredible $16.5 billion to our economy. That footprint includes 369,000 vehicles, thousands of specialist businesses, 5,200 jobs, and a passionate community that keeps NZ’s motoring heritage alive.

From restoration workshops to museums, events, collectors, and everyday enthusiasts, this sector is far more than a hobby - it’s a significant contributor to New Zealand’s cultural identity and economic activity.

At Waimak Valuations, we see the impact of this market every day. The data simply confirms what enthusiasts have always known: classic vehicles aren’t just part of our past - they’re a thriving part of our future.

JDM classics are becoming one of the strongest segments in New Zealand’s collector car economy.
Recent market data shows that Japanese performance icons such as the Skyline GTR, Supra, RX7 and Integra Type R are appreciating faster than many European and American classics.

JDM vehicles now make up more than 40 percent of NZ’s classic‑era fleet (1980–2000). High‑demand models are recording annual value growth of around 18 percent, compared with 9 percent for European classics and 6 percent for American muscle. Insurance valuations for rare JDM models have increased by 50 to 100 percent since 2020, driven by global scarcity and rising collector interest.

Younger buyers are accelerating this trend. Nearly half of all JDM classic purchases in NZ are made by collectors under 40, creating sustained demand for specialist workshops, restoration services and valuation expertise.

At Waimak Valuations we see this shift every day. JDM cars are no longer simply nostalgic performance favourites. They are a major contributor to the future of New Zealand’s automotive economy.
