🔧🚨 ANOTHER FORD ECOBOOM SAVED AT TAMWORTH GARAGE LTD! 🚨🔧

Today we had a Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost in for a complete wetbelt replacement, including the oil pump belt, all the usual associated components and a full engine service.

And it's a good job the customer booked it in when they did! 😳

Upon stripping the engine down, we discovered:

❌ Timing belt in extremely poor condition!

❌ A tooth already missing from the wetbelt!

❌ Oil pickup strainer absolutely FULL of rubber debris — or as we like to call it, EcoBoost caviar! 🐟😂

❌ Belt material breaking down and contaminating the engine oil system.

This is exactly why these engines have earned the nickname ECOBOOM! 💥

A blocked oil pickup strainer can starve the engine of oil, resulting in serious engine damage, turbocharger failure or even complete engine failure!

🔧🚗 Another Busy Day at Tamworth Garage LTD!

Today we had this Nissan Qashqai in for some much-needed repairs!

The vehicle required all 4 shock absorbers replacing, as they had suffered from severe corrosion and were completely rusted out! 😳

What should have been a fairly straightforward job quickly turned into a nightmare! 🔩 Nearly every bolt we touched sheared off due to the amount of rust, making the job a lot more challenging than expected!

We also replaced brake discs and pads all round, as these were also heavily corroded and well past their best.

✅ 4 new shock absorbers fitted

✅ Seized and snapped bolts dealt with

✅ Vehicle back together and ready for the road!

🚨 ANOTHER SHOCKING JOB AT TAMWORTH GARAGE LTD! 🚨

🔧 Citroën Dispatch – Non-Start & Multiple Fluid Leaks!

Today we had a Citroën Dispatch brought into us after it had recently undergone a complete engine rebuild by a specialist engine rebuilding company!

Unfortunately, the customer was now experiencing a non-starting issue and several fluid leaks, so they asked us to investigate.

What we discovered was extremely disappointing, especially considering this engine had supposedly just been professionally rebuilt! 😳

❌ Second-hand cambelt fitted to a freshly rebuilt engine!

❌ Second-hand rocker cover fitted with silicone around the gaskets!

❌ Leaking injector seals

❌ Leaking water pump

❌ Leaking clutch slave cylinder

❌ BOTH engine sumps leaking oil after what appeared to be ordinary bathroom silicone had been used to seal them! Yes, bathroom silicone on a freshly rebuilt engine! 🤦‍♂️

A freshly rebuilt engine should not be leaving a specialist workshop with issues like these!

🔧 SO WHAT DID WE DO?

✅ Investigated the non-starting issue
✅ Removed and rectified the previous poor workmanship
✅ Replaced the used and leaking components with brand-new parts including Cambelt
✅ Corrected the rocker cover and injector sealing issues
✅ Removed both engine sumps, thoroughly cleaned away the old silicone and correctly resealed them using suitable automotive sealant
✅ Carried out the necessary repairs to get the vehicle back on the road

💥 One happy customer, but unfortunately one who has now had to PAY TWICE to have the job done properly!

We find it incredibly disappointing when customers spend their hard-earned money with supposed engine specialists, only to end up paying another garage to put things right.

A second-hand cambelt, leaking components and bathroom silicone used to seal engine sumps on a freshly rebuilt engine is simply unacceptable workmanship in our opinion!

🚨 £8,000 ENGINE REPLACEMENT AVOIDED! 🚨

🔧 Another successful diagnosis at Tamworth Garage LTD!

Today we had a 2017 Vauxhall Vivaro Euro 6 brought into us after the customer had recently visited a main dealer.

The van was suffering from:
❌ Heavy blue smoke from the exhaust
❌ Severe loss of power
❌ Poor engine performance

The main dealer had diagnosed the vehicle as needing a complete replacement engine, quoting the customer a staggering £8,000 including VAT, fitted! 😳

Thankfully, the customer decided to get a second opinion before spending thousands of pounds.

After carrying out our own investigations and diagnosis, we discovered the actual problem was a faulty turbocharger — NOT a failed engine!

🔧 TODAY AT TAMWORTH GARAGE LTD 🔧
Today we collected this Ford Fiesta after the customer lost the clutch pedal and was expecting to need a replacement clutch.
Once we got it on the ramp, we quickly found the actual problem. The car had been into Ford last week for a neutral position switch and some other work, and unfortunately the clutch pipe hadn’t been clipped back in correctly, causing the clutch fluid to leak out and the pedal to disappear.
We could have simply fitted the clutch the customer was expecting — but we’re not going to charge somebody for parts they don’t need. 👍
We correctly secured the clutch pipe, topped up and bled the system, and the clutch was working again.
The customer also asked us to give the car a check-over while it was here. We found a split and knocking lower arm bush, along with play in a drop link and tie rod. As the parts were inexpensive, we replaced them and only charged an hour’s labour for the additional work.
Sometimes the right diagnosis can save you hundreds of pounds. 🔧

🔧 ANOTHER WET BELT DONE AT TAMWORTH GARAGE LTD! 🔧
Another Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost in today for its wet belt replacement.
This one had covered just 50,000 miles, but at 10 years old it was time to get it sorted before it became a much more expensive problem.
We fitted genuine Ford belts, along with a new crankshaft seal, crank bolt and washer. As always, the cases and mating surfaces were thoroughly cleaned and prepared before everything went back together — no shortcuts.

😂 Well… this was an interesting one today!

We had an Alfa Romeo Giulia in at Tamworth Garage LTD carrying out a scuttle modification to help prevent water getting onto the ECUs again — because nobody wants a wet ECU turning into another bill for thousands!

While the vehicle was with us, the customer asked us to check the “new ECUs” he believed had been supplied after his car had previously been at Research Garage Alfa Romeo main dealer in Nuneaton with a non-running fault.

The customer showed us paperwork relating to a bill of approximately £4,300, which included a new key and ECU-related work.

So naturally, while doing the scuttle modification, we checked the ECUs for him…

Both original ECUs were still there. 😂

From our inspection, both units appeared untouched and were still displaying their original 2017 manufacturing/build-date markings. The replacement ECU the customer had been supplied wasn't fitted to the vehicle.

So from the customer's point of view, after a bill of around £4,300, he's understandably asking the question: what exactly did I pay for? Because the “new ECUs” he believed he had paid for certainly weren't fitted when we inspected the car.

We've documented exactly what we found with photographs and evidence for the customer.

We understand he has since raised the matter with Research Garage and has been told that no refund will be provided. He has told us he now intends to pursue the matter formally through the courts.

We work on cars every day and even we had to look twice at this one. 😂

Just goes to show — don't assume everything has been done correctly simply because a vehicle has been to a main dealer. Check the work you've paid for. Based on what we've seen on this car, even a main-dealer invoice wouldn't stop us checking!

If you've paid thousands for major components to be replaced, make sure the new parts have actually made it onto the car. 👀

🔧 TODAY’S JOB – NOT QUITE THE STRAIGHTFORWARD ENGINE SWAP WE EXPECTED! 🔧
Today we had a local transport company’s 2021 Peugeot van in with us following complete engine failure. The plan was simple enough — remove the failed engine and replace it with the customer-supplied unit.
That was until we discovered the replacement was from a 2024 vehicle. 😅
Although the engines initially looked very similar, we quickly found numerous differences between the two. What should have been a straightforward engine replacement turned into essentially a bare engine/block swap, transferring a huge amount from the original engine onto the replacement, including:
🔧 Complete engine wiring loom
🔧 Alternator
🔧 Turbocharger
🔧 DPF/exhaust components
🔧 Numerous sensors
🔧 Pipes, brackets and fittings
🔧 Various other ancillaries required to make the newer engine compatible
A considerably bigger job than first anticipated, but rather than being beaten by the differences, we worked through them and got everything transferred across correctly.
Jobs like this are exactly why an engine swap isn't always simply “old engine out, new engine in.” The same model with a different year or engine revision can have a surprising number of differences.
