2019 Transporter 2.0Tdi engine failure.

Vehicle was in for a Crank oil seal, Wet oil pump belt and a new timing belt and water pump, All seemed ok until I removed the sump pan, I found the remains of a needle roller bearing and some metal shavings.

I suspected a roller rocker had failed, removed the top cover to confirm, Found cyl1 inlet valve 1 rocker had snapped, Significant scoring to the cam lobe and consequential damage to the surrounding valve train ensued.

Due to the nature of the fault and obvious signs of damage to both top and bottom end of the engine, The decision was made to fit a new engine.

Another reminder that diagnostics and experience matter more than guessing 🔧
For the last few months this workshop/camper van had been driving us mad, especially from cold starts. Pulling away from junctions, the revs would suddenly dip right down, nearly stalling, with the whole van shaking and juddering badly.
Naturally, the mind starts going to worst-case scenarios:
injectors, fuel pump, MAP sensor, MAF sensor, wiring loom issues… the list goes on.
The breakthrough only came once we started using our new diagnostic platform, allowing us to record live data during road tests. After carefully analysing the data, we spotted something interesting — the clutch pedal switch was randomly sticking on. No pattern, no temperature link, just completely sporadic. But every time it happened, the revs would drop dramatically and the drivability went terrible.
Fitted a new clutch switch, took it for a road test, and it now drives beautifully again — smooth and responsive, just like it should.
Modern vehicles don’t always make fault finding easy, but this is exactly why proper diagnostics are so important 👍

Gentle reminder
Timing belts or and toothed belt were not designed to run in engine oil, they have been modified, But are failing

Here’s a picture of an Oil pump belt that’s failed
Under no tension, the only strain this belt has on it, is driving the oil pump itself.

They need replacing, it’s costly, but cheaper than repairing or replacing your engine due to oil starvation.

If you have a VAG group car 1.6 or 2.0 TDI CR engine that’s roughly 2014 onward, My advice is get this replaced, along with a new crank seal and bolt, if your timing belt and water pump needs replacing do that too.

Afternoon all,
Something that really needs highlighting, as it’s becoming an increasingly common issue I’m seeing in the workshop.

On VAG 2.0 TDI EA288 CR engines (circa 2012 onwards) — as well as the 1.6 TDI variants — the belt-in-oil (wet belt) system is proving to be a serious long-term reliability concern.
As these belts age, they degrade internally, shedding material into the engine oil. This debris can:
Collect in the oil pickup
Restrict oil flow
Reach critical engine components
And, in an increasing number of cases, the belts are snapping.

When this happens, it results in immediate oil pressure loss, with engine damage following very quickly, This is not a cheap repair, particularly once oil starvation has occurred — but ignoring it often proves far more expensive.

If you own a vehicle with one of these engines, I’d strongly advise giving serious consideration to preventative wet oil pump belt replacement, rather than waiting for symptoms or outright failure. There are a few other components that will be replaced at the same time, Crank oil seal and crank pulley bolt, Timing belt and water pump optional whilst it’s stripped down

Very common issue on the 1.6 and 2.0 tdi - crank seal timing end of the engine leaks, Always have the sump off, replace the wet oil pump belt, clean out the oil pickup pipe, replace the seal and housing, new crank pulley bolt and fit a new timing belt and water pump, This one had a leaking water pump too so all in all a job well done
