Gentle reminder
Timing belts or and toothed belt were not designed to run in engine oil, they have been modified, But are failing

Here’s a picture of an Oil pump belt that’s failed
Under no tension, the only strain this belt has on it, is driving the oil pump itself.

They need replacing, it’s costly, but cheaper than repairing or replacing your engine due to oil starvation.

If you have a VAG group car 1.6 or 2.0 TDI CR engine that’s roughly 2014 onward, My advice is get this replaced, along with a new crank seal and bolt, if your timing belt and water pump needs replacing do that too.

Afternoon all,
Something that really needs highlighting, as it’s becoming an increasingly common issue I’m seeing in the workshop.

On VAG 2.0 TDI EA288 CR engines (circa 2012 onwards) — as well as the 1.6 TDI variants — the belt-in-oil (wet belt) system is proving to be a serious long-term reliability concern.
As these belts age, they degrade internally, shedding material into the engine oil. This debris can:
Collect in the oil pickup
Restrict oil flow
Reach critical engine components
And, in an increasing number of cases, the belts are snapping.

When this happens, it results in immediate oil pressure loss, with engine damage following very quickly, This is not a cheap repair, particularly once oil starvation has occurred — but ignoring it often proves far more expensive.

If you own a vehicle with one of these engines, I’d strongly advise giving serious consideration to preventative wet oil pump belt replacement, rather than waiting for symptoms or outright failure. There are a few other components that will be replaced at the same time, Crank oil seal and crank pulley bolt, Timing belt and water pump optional whilst it’s stripped down

Very common issue on the 1.6 and 2.0 tdi - crank seal timing end of the engine leaks, Always have the sump off, replace the wet oil pump belt, clean out the oil pickup pipe, replace the seal and housing, new crank pulley bolt and fit a new timing belt and water pump, This one had a leaking water pump too so all in all a job well done

The dreaded high pressure fuel pump failure glitter show 🤮🤮🤮 absolute nightmare, new fuel tank sender, low pressure pump, high pressure pump, rail and sensors and injectors, all lines flushed out, tank cleaned, such an expensive failure

Please please please STOP driving through flood water unless your vehicle is equipped to do so, It’s simply not worth the risk of expensive repairs, or the risk to you and any occupants of the vehicle you are in.

Watch the link below, That engine sounds like it’s snapped a rod or the crank £2000 maybe more to put it right.

It doesn’t matter if your car is petrol, Diesel or Electric, they are not designed to drive through deep water, it gets everywhere and causes so many problems.
