Passed your MOT? That's the test passed, not the car looked after.
A new survey of UK garages found 72% of technicians say customers believe a pass means no further work is needed. It doesn't. An MOT checks your car meets the legal minimum on the day. A service maintains the car so it keeps meeting it.
The same survey found the most deferred repair of all is the dashboard warning light: 64% of garages say warning lights top the list of repairs drivers put off. Some of those lights end in a simple fix. Others end in a rebuilt engine, and the difference is usually how long the light was ignored.
The honest version:
• An MOT is a snapshot of the legal minimums: brakes above a threshold, tyres above a threshold, emissions within limits.
• A service replaces what wears out and checks what the MOT never looks at: oil, filters, plugs, coolant, belts, the things that keep a car alive between tests.
• An advisory is not a pass. It's a dated note from a tester who saw something starting to wear. Next year it's a fail; the middle of that year is the cheaper place to deal with it.
• A warning light is the car telling you before the damage spreads. Diagnostics take minutes, not days.
So if yours passed with advisories, or a light's been on since spring, now's a good moment. AutoWorkz: servicing, diagnostics, MOTs, brakes, timing chains, head gaskets and repairs in Yaxley since 2007. Trust My Garage member.
