Westgate Road back in the day 🏍️

A brilliant snapshot of Newcastle street bike culture from the 70s into the 80s and 90s, when Westgate Road was one of the beating pistons of the North East motorcycle scene. Long before social media and mobile phones, this was where riders gathered, stories were swapped, engines were tuned, and wheelies were pulled.

The area around Westgate Road was packed with motorcycle dealers, repair shops, accessory stores and meeting points for bikers from across Tyneside. Japanese superbikes were taking over the streets, British classics were still hanging on, and every weekend the sound of revving engines echoed through Newcastle city centre like mechanical thunder.

For many people growing up in Newcastle during that era, Westgate Road wasn’t just a road. It was part racetrack, part social club, and part showroom. If you were into bikes, sooner or later you ended up there.

Amazing how one photo can bring back the smell of petrol, two-stroke smoke and summer evenings in the city. 🏁
