Starting manual lessons can feel like a lot at first, especially when you look down and see three pedals instead of two. 🚗

Here's the simple version:

🟢 Clutch (left pedal): disconnects the engine from the wheels. You use it when pulling away, changing gear and coming to a stop.
🔴 Brake (middle pedal): slows the car down or stops it. Press smoothly and firmly when you need to.
🔵 Accelerator (right pedal): controls the engine speed. Press to go faster, ease off to slow down gradually.

One thing that catches a lot of learners out: left foot for the clutch, right foot for the brake and the accelerator. Never both feet on the right side.

It all feels clumsy at first, but with a bit of practice it becomes second nature. Everyone starts somewhere, and I'll be right there with you.

Q: Do learner drivers need insurance? 🚗

A: Absolutely. You must be insured to drive the vehicle, either through your instructor or via a learner insurance policy if you're practising privately.

⚖️ What the law says: Under Section 143 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, a person "must not use a motor vehicle on a road" without valid insurance in force. Letting someone else drive without insurance is an offence too, so if a parent or friend lends you their car, they need to make sure you're covered.

🚫 The penalty: A £300 fixed penalty and 6 penalty points, or an unlimited fine and a driving ban if it goes to court. The vehicle can also be seized.

You've had your say on my poll, and so far it's a clear yes. Nobody has voted no.

The question was whether learners should complete a set number of lesson hours before they can book their driving test. You're not alone in thinking so. An earlier survey by IAM RoadSmart found that 68% of people in the UK backed a 12-month supervised learning period before the test. The RAC Foundation has also pointed out that one in five young drivers has an accident within six months of passing.

Right now the Department for Transport is asking for views on this exact idea. The consultation covers a minimum learning period of three or six months between passing the theory test and taking the practical, plus a minimum number of supervised driving hours. Anyone can respond, including learners, parents and drivers.

From the driving seat, I see why it matters. Learners who get time in the dark, in the rain, in heavy traffic and on faster roads before their test are far more confident once they pass.
