When do I know someone is ready for their driving test? Simple. When I’d happily sit in the back, say nothing and let them drive me around like they’re my Uber driver. That’s the standard: safe, independent and confident without needing me.

Legally, once a passenger is 14 or over, they are responsible for wearing their own seat belt. But should legal responsibility be where the driver’s responsibility ends?

If someone gets into your car, shouldn’t you feel a moral responsibility for their safety, regardless of their age? If one of my passengers isn’t wearing a seat belt, should I simply think, “They’re over 14, that’s their problem” — or should I refuse to drive until everyone is belted up?

Your car. Your passengers. Should their safety ultimately be your responsibility?

Should your driving instructor sit in the back and observe your driving test?

In this video, I explain to Kiah why having your instructor come along can actually be really useful. It’s not about having someone there to help — they can’t — it’s about your instructor seeing exactly what happened, understanding any feedback from the examiner and, if you don’t pass, knowing exactly what needs working on afterwards.

But would having your instructor sitting behind you make you MORE nervous?

Do you have to put the handbrake on at a STOP junction?

This is one of those things that different learners seem to get taught differently. Some are told that when you reach a STOP sign, you must come to a complete stop and put the handbrake on.

But is that actually the rule?

The important legal requirement is that you stop. The car must actually come to a complete stop before you proceed. Slowing right down and creeping through isn't stopping.

But that doesn't mean you automatically have to apply the handbrake.

There may be situations where using it makes sense — perhaps you're waiting for traffic or you're on a gradient — but that's very different from saying the handbrake must go on simply because it's a STOP junction.

So what were you taught? Stop and handbrake on, or simply make sure the car completely stops?

It's not always about reacting to what's happening directly in front of you — good driving means looking ahead, recognising potential hazards and being prepared to adjust your speed when necessary.

When we're teaching someone to pass objects safely, one of the biggest mistakes I see isn't actually poor judgement of distance. It's hyperfixation. Looking ahead at a bigger object and losing focus on the passing object.
