🔧 A closer look at what’s hiding behind the brakes…

This BMW Z4 recently came into us with an issue affecting the handbrake. As part of our inspection, we stripped the rear brakes to properly assess the condition of the handbrake shoes and associated components.

What we found wasn’t pretty. 👀

The rear brake backing plates were completely rotten, to the point that the pins securing the handbrake shoes had started pulling through the corroded plates.

At this stage, simply replacing the handbrake shoes wouldn’t have been an appropriate repair. After discussing our findings with the customer, we agreed to replace the backing plates, wheel bearings and associated components.

The wheel bearings need to be removed to carry out this repair correctly, so this was the opportunity to replace them at the same time rather than cutting corners.

Everything was rebuilt correctly and the handbrake is now back to doing exactly what it should, bringing this Z4’s handbrake back to its former glory. 👌

Another example of why a proper inspection matters. What looks like a simple brake issue can sometimes reveal much more once you get the components apart.

Inspect it properly. Repair it properly. Keep it safe.

🔧 Small components, big difference.

This BMW 5 Series came into us for replacement of the rear differential bushes. After inspection, we found that the original bushes were showing signs of wear, allowing unwanted movement within the differential assembly.

Rather than simply fitting another set of standard rubber bushes, we upgraded them to polyurethane bushes.

Poly bushes offer increased resistance to movement compared with conventional rubber, helping to keep the differential more securely located under load and improving the feel and consistency of the drivetrain.

It’s not always the biggest or most obvious component that makes the biggest difference. Getting the foundations right can have a significant effect on how a vehicle drives. 👌

🔧 When the problem isn’t where you first expect it…

This M62 engine originally came to us as a non-runner. Around a year ago, we stripped and rebuilt the engine, carrying out crankshaft shell bearings, an oil pump and timing chains before putting it through an extensive road test.

A few months later, the vehicle developed a fault with the Bank 1 inlet VANOS system.

With the engine back apart, our plan was to inspect the camshaft and, if everything looked as expected, replace the oil control rings.

But this is why proper diagnosis and inspection matter. 👀

We found that a section of the camshaft casting where the oil control ring sits had broken away. That damage was allowing the VANOS system to behave incorrectly and simply replacing the seals would never have solved the underlying problem.

The solution was a new inlet camshaft, along with the associated gaskets and components required to put everything back together correctly.

The vehicle is now back on the road and, so far, so good. 🤞

It’s a good reminder that sometimes the fault isn’t the component you initially suspect and that’s exactly why we take the time to properly strip, inspect and diagnose rather than simply replacing parts and hoping for the best.

Diagnose it. Find it. Fix it properly. 🔧

It’s been a little quieter than usual on our social media lately, and for good reason!

The workshop has been incredibly busy over the past couple of weeks as we’ve been working hard to get customers’ vehicles repaired and back on the road before the holiday season really gets underway. Like many of you, our team are also looking forward to some well-earned time off with family over the coming weeks, so it’s been all hands on deck to keep everything moving.

One of last week’s larger jobs was this BMW N47 timing chain replacement. This wasn’t carried out because the chain had failed, but as preventative maintenance.

The N47 engine is well known for timing chain wear, and unfortunately if the chain snaps it can cause catastrophic engine damage, often resulting in a repair bill many times higher than replacing the chains before they fail.

Our general recommendation is to consider preventative replacement at around 100,000 miles or 10 years, unless we’ve previously inspected your vehicle and advised differently based on its condition and service history.

Preventative maintenance isn’t always the most exciting money to spend on your car, but it’s often the most cost-effective way of avoiding major failures and keeping your BMW or MINI reliable for years to come.

We’ll do our best to keep the updates coming over the summer, but if we’re a little quieter than normal, it’s because we’re busy doing what we love,
