Do you know your tyre anatomy?
In our latest instalment of the Stay Road Ready series this May, we're diving into the essential components of a tyre and their crucial roles in ensuring optimal performance!
§ Let's start with the tread, which plays a vital role in dispersing water and preventing aquaplaning. The inner tread is responsible for this water displacement, while the outer tread boasts rigid blocks that enhance stiffness, providing excellent grip during cornering and on dry surfaces. Plus, it helps reduce interior noise for a quieter ride.
§ Moving on to the sidewalls, they are located between the bead and the tread. These sidewalls are made with thicker rubber to enhance tyre stability. They are also designed to with-stand abrasion from curbs, ensuring the tyre remains securely sealed to the wheel rim.
§ Next up, we have the belt, which lies beneath the tread. This component is responsible for resisting radiating force that could otherwise distort a spinning tyre. By doing so, it helps maintain the tyre's shape and stability, ensuring a smooth and safe ride.
§ Now, let's talk about the beads. These mighty components hold the tyre firmly onto the wheel rim. Made from strong steel, they are coated with bronze or brass to resist corrosion. To provide an extra layer of protection, they are then coated with rubber.
§ Finally, we have the body ply. This essential component works to contain the pressure within the tyre. It absorbs any shocks from braking and steering, ensuring a comfortable ride for the driver.
