Most drivers judge tyre life by mileage alone… but the type of miles you do can make a huge difference. 👇

Tyre blowouts don't just happen, they're usually the result of a problem that's been building up over time.

What's Your Tyre Telling You?

Your tyres can reveal a lot about the condition of your vehicle, if you know what to look for.

✅ Even Wear
This is what we like to see. It usually indicates correct tyre pressures, good wheel alignment and healthy suspension components.

⚠️ Centre Wear
Often caused by over-inflation. Too much pressure means the centre of the tyre carries most of the load, wearing it out prematurely.

⚠️ Edge Wear
Usually a sign of under-inflation. Low pressures cause the shoulders of the tyre to do more of the work, reducing tyre life and fuel efficiency.

⚠️ One-Sided Wear
Commonly linked to wheel alignment issues. Left unchecked, it can dramatically shorten tyre life and affect how your vehicle handles.

The good news? Most abnormal tyre wear can be identified early and corrected before it becomes an expensive problem.

Run-flat tyres are increasingly standard on new and premium cars - BMW, Mercedes, Mini, MINI and many others fit them as original equipment. But most drivers who have them don't fully understand how they work or what their limitations are. This post is for you.

🔵 WHAT ARE THEY?
Run-flat tyres have reinforced sidewalls that support the weight of the car even when the tyre has lost all air pressure. This allows you to continue driving after a puncture, without pulling over immediately or having to change a wheel at the roadside.

🔵 WHAT ARE THE LIMITS?
This is where it gets critical. Run-flats are not a normal-driving solution after a puncture. The standard guidance is:
— Maximum speed of 50mph
— Maximum distance of approximately 50 miles
— Drive in a straight line where possible - avoid hard cornering

🔵 CAN THEY BE REPAIRED?
Often no. Many tyre manufacturers and safety guidelines state that a run-flat tyre that has been driven on while flat should be replaced, not repaired - because the internal structure may have been compromised even if no visible damage is apparent.

🔵 YOUR TPMS IS ESSENTIAL
Because run-flat tyres feel almost identical to normal tyres when deflated, you will not feel a puncture the way you would with a standard tyre. Your Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) warning light is your only alert. If it comes on - take it seriously immediately.

🔵 NOT ALL GARAGES STOCK THEM
Run-flat tyres can be significantly harder to source and more expensive than standard tyres. If you're away from home when you get a puncture, the nearest garage may not have your size in stock.

🌧️ May showers might feel harmless… until your tyres can’t clear the water.

Aquaplaning happens when your tyres hit more water than the tread can shift, causing the car to literally ride on top of the water instead of the road. At that point? No grip. No steering. No proper braking.

And here’s the worrying bit… tyres can look “fine” at a glance, but worn tread massively increases the risk.

A few signs it’s time for a check:
🔸 Tread looking low
🔸 Uneven wear across the tyre
🔸 Steering feels light or vague in heavy rain
🔸 It’s been a while since anyone checked them properly

The legal limit is 1.6mm, but wet weather performance drops off long before that.

If you checked your tyre pressures over winter and haven’t looked since, now’s a good time to have another look.

As the weather warms up, so does the air inside your tyres. For every 10°C increase in temperature, tyre pressure can rise by around 1 PSI. Doesn’t sound like much, but it adds up quicker than you think, especially on warm roads.

Most people worry about tyres being underinflated… but overinflation can cause just as many issues:

• Less grip on the road (especially in the wet)
• Uneven wear through the centre of the tyre
• A harsher, less comfortable drive
• Increased risk of damage on longer journeys

Best thing to do? Check them when the tyres are cold and make sure they’re set to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure, not what’s written on the tyre itself.
