Nova Motorsport USA Manager Ken Payne is at Lime Rock Park this weekend for the 44th Historic Festival, one of North America’s great celebrations of historic motorsport, with Alfa Romeo taking centre stage as this year’s featured marque.

With an outstanding field spanning decades of racing history, Ken will be catching up with drivers, teams, customers and friends from across the US historic racing community.

Many competitors have elected to race on Avon Motorsport tyres, continuing the brand’s long-standing association with historic competition around the world. 🛞🇺🇸🌎

There’s a story behind every car on the Sixties’ Endurance grid — and car no 9 racing at the Le Mans Classic Series legendary Dix Mille Tours event Circuit Paul Ricard has much to tell.

The 1963 Shelby Cobra 289 of Alain and Yves Vögele carries both history and family continuity into this weekend’s racing. The no 9 Cobra has been a familiar sight in Sixties’ Endurance competition over the years, with members of the Vögele family continuing to campaign one of the most iconic GT cars of the 1960s.

Paul Ricard has also been a happy hunting ground for the car. In 2024, the no 9 Cobra finished an impressive third overall at the Dix Mille Tours, underlining its pace against a highly competitive field of historic GT machinery.

That performance potential has been evident again this weekend, with some of the highest average speeds seen during practice across the entire Sixties’ Endurance field.

With its unmistakable V8 soundtrack, formidable straight-line performance and years of competition history behind it, the no 9 Cobra remains a car to watch whenever it takes to the track.

Competing on Avon Motorsport tyres also sees a continuation of a longstanding racing relationship between two iconic names, each synonymous with the golden era of GT competition.

Product update: Nova Motorsport have reached a major milestone with the successful first track tests of the Nova ZZXC – the first entirely new competition tyre to be conceived, designed, developed and manufactured by Nova Motorsport.

Created specifically for Cross Car competition, the Nova ZZXC represents the next chapter in our evolution, as we expand from safeguarding and returning proven Avon Motorsport products back into production, to developing an exciting new generation of specialist competition tyres.

The Nova ZZXC was developed from the ground up around the demands of Cross Car – extreme acceleration and braking, high yaw angles, aggressive cornering and constantly changing mixed surfaces.

The result is an innovative package featuring radically different front and rear tread designs. The asymmetrical rear tyre design combines an open inner tread for traction with larger outer shoulder blocks for durability. Its working profile can also be adjusted through tyre pressure to suit different conditions. The directional front combines an arrow-shaped central block with larger outer blocks, for an enhanced steering response and managed cornering loads.

Initial testing took place at Circuit Parc de la Serra in Mollerussa, Spain, with three-time FIA European Cross Car Champion David Méat, evaluating traction, acceleration, braking, steering response, cornering and durability while benchmarking the ZZXC against established competitor products.

Further validation followed in France, where champion driver Olivier Barré topped the timesheets while trialling the Nova ZZXC during Round 6 of the French Autocross and Sprint Car Championship.

Available in soft and medium compounds, the new ZZXC joins our proven Rallycross and Autocross products to further strengthen our mixed-surface competition ranges.

The Nova ZZXC will be presented at Lohéac, France, 28–30 August, during one of Europe’s biggest rallycross weekends, ahead of becoming available to competitors from Spring 2027.

For US Nova Motorsport dealer and racer Brandon Kraus, motor racing has always been about one thing: the engineering of grip.

After decades as a championship-winning driver, test driver, and race engineer, his relationship with Avon Motorsport tyres took hold in 2012 when a Norma Prototype endurance programme needed better tyre consistency. Avon developed a new solution in just two weeks, delivering around two seconds per lap and dramatically improving long-run performance.

That success led to thousands of Avon tyres being developed for prototypes, formula cars, and club racing across the US – and a surge in demand at his dealership.

Brandon believes Avon’s greatest strength was its consistency, rapid development, and willingness to solve problems. When the Avon factory closed, he feared that expertise would be lost. Instead, it continued through Nova Motorsport, with many of the same engineers and compound specialists carrying the legacy forward.

As Brandon says, the soul of Avon Motorsport didn’t disappear – it moved to Nova Motorsport.
