This week at Hi Comp.

This tuff as nails Torana in for a dyno tune.

With its LS engine and Haltech Elete 2500 ECU, we just knew this was going to be a ton of fun to tune.

Falling fuel pressure in the upper part of the run had us checking for restrictions in the fuel system. We quickly found an almost fully blocked fuel filter. This had the removable and washable element, so we were back on track in no time, with the fuel pressure now at 60 psi dead stable throughout the run, we were able to dial our fuel numbers and trims down to a tee.

Just check the power numbers. This thing is going to be a great drive wherever you’re going.

This week at Hi Comp.

This HQ race car in for a dyno tune.

Once in a while, a customer comes along who is a genuinely great person, who is always a pleasure to deal with, and who makes everyone in the workshop just a little bit happier when they visit.
Amanda is one such person.

She owns and drives this well put together car in the HQ race series.

This series is a strictly controlled class, where all engines are sealed by an accredited inspector upon assembly, to ensure that all engines meet tight class rules.
All engines have to have the same camshaft, no head porting is allowed, capacity is controlled, and everyone has to use the standard carby and manifold.

135 RWHP was always about as good as it could get when I used to build these engines over 25 years ago. Our job was to run in and tune this engine which was built elsewhere.

HQ racing is truly all about driver skills, rather than outright power.

This week at Hi Comp.

This beautiful Ford Cobra in for a dyno tune.

With its 302 Windsor engine, Edelbrock carby and MSD distributor, this neat streetcar was always going to be a lot of fun to tune.

The usual suspects all needed some work, like the ignition timing curve, carby needles and vacuum springs.
The secondary air valve also got some attention, with five or six different positions trialed over the course of the tune.

The end result was about 20 plus extra horsepower over the ‘as delivered’ baseline.

This week at Hi Comp.

This classic EH in for a dyno tune.

This fully modified EH sports a stroker SBC engine with full aftermarket suspension, steering, and all auxiliary systems. Somehow, the body and paint don’t match the beauty of the mechanical systems?
That’s because there is a fully restored, beautifully painted body ready to accept the entire mechanical systems, waiting in a prestige paint shop somewhere in Sydney.
Which, when you think about it, is a sensible way to restore a classic car that is meant to be driven.

Our job was to get the tune right, which involved a new carby, and a recurve of the MSD dizzy. The engine was a little fussy, and jetting took some time to get right, but just look at the results. Must be that beautifully swoopy rig welded stainless exhaust.

This week at Hi Comp.

We celebrated another birthday this week, and this time it was Dimitri’s turn.
At 19 years of age Dimitri also entered the fourth year of his apprenticeship with Hi Comp this week.
Well done young man, you’re almost there. Happiest of birthdays to you. You’re doing a great job.

This week at Hi Comp.

This beautiful classic HR Holden in for a dyno tune.

It was decided after doing a baseline run, that the old and outdated Holley, vacuum secondary carby had to go. Replaced with a brand new Holley, four corner idle, mechanical secondary carby. Both carbys were 750 cfm.

The Chevy HEI ignition system needed quite a bit of work to get right. The timing curve was completely wrong for the engine, and although not my favourite distributor, I was able to rig up an adjustable mechanism for altering the mechanical advance to come up with a timing curve that got results.

Between the new carby, and the regraphed distributor, the engine gained almost 50 RWHP.
A great result for the effort and expense.
