Avalon Volunteer Official Enjoys Karting Success

On any given night of competition Neil Soutter is one of the unsung heroes at Avalon Raceway, volunteering his time, along with countless others, to ensure that the drivers and spectators can bask in the glory of the on-track action!

Neil’s roles vary from attending to one of the two pit gates, managing the re-start cone or administrating the infamous white chalk line which determines, well according to officialdom anyway, where the races commence!

All important tasks when it comes to the smooth running of a Speedway event.

Given Neil’s Speedway interest, it comes as no surprise that the bug well and truly bit, whilst attending the Avalon Raceway Swap Meet some seven or eight years ago!

The result being his son making some laps over a couple of seasons, before the inevitable occurred and Neil too took the track!

The 2025-26 season has been a career one for Neil, with a second-place finish in the Doug Drew Memorial and a strong run at the Queensland Title, where he finished just off the podium in fourth!

Then during April back-to-back events at Timmis Speedway, Mildura saw team Soutter stand tall!

On April 11, the Victorian Title, in warm conditions, the three heat race format produced a 1st, 5th and 3rd place finish, good enough to secure a starting position of third in the final!

Amidst the helter-skelter of the early going an inadvertent spin would see Neil go to the rear of the field, however, not to be deterred he pedaled his way back through the strong field to secure third place and the right to claim V3 as well as being rewarded as the weekend long Hard Charger!

Two weeks later and Neil was back at Timmis Speedway for the SKAA Australian Title, which was run over two days (April 25 and 26). With three heats on the first day of competition and a single heat and finals on day two, Neil excelled to be the high points Man come feature time, thus securing a pole position starting slot amidst a standout field of karts!

After a strong start and some tight, competitive racing Neil spent a majority of the race in second, peppering away as he sought one more coveted spot, eventually crossing the line in third to claim the Title of Australia 3 in the Standard Heavy Class.

The entire Drew Family and Venue Management know that Neil is extremely proud of his results, and we congratulate him on this amazing achievement!

Well done Neil!

We would once again like to thank the Lara RSL Sub-Branch, including President Marcus McEwen and Russell Lowe, for their support of our recent Diggers Cup.

🏁 BL Track Championship Decided at Avalon

With the weekend’s event bringing the season to a close at Avalon Raceway, it also marked the final round of the “BL” Brian Linigen Track Championship for the Speedcars.

A solid $3,000 prize pool was on the line, with $1,500 going to the overall winner — and it was 17-year-old Kyabram young gun Aston Rodriguez who came out on top.

Making the jump from Junior F500s, Rodriguez has taken to Speedcars like a natural, putting together a standout season with multiple strong results at Avalon to secure the title.

On Saturday night, he held off current 3-time National Champion Kaidon Brown — and edged him out in the championship as well by just 15 points.

It was great to see Brown competing at Avalon this season, finishing second overall, with Nick Parker rounding out the podium.

Final Championship Standings:

1. V30 Aston Rodriguez – 300
2. A1 Kaidon Brown – 285
3. V39 Nick Parker – 275
4. V10 Caleb Mills – 200
5. V12 Justin McMinn – 180
6. V27 Conor Ryan – 170
7. S6E Kaidon Manders – 170
8. V55 Toby Smith – 160
9. V88s Glen Shaw – 150
10. V40 Rusty Hickman – 140

Avalon Raceway extends a big thank you to BL for his support, along with Mark Cooper and the team at American Racer for supplying right rear tyres to random feature winners throughout the series.

This year’s Track Championship was proudly run in conjunction with the Victorian Speedcar Drivers Association.

We know Rusty Hickman knows how to celebrate, but putting it onto its lid less than 360 degrees into the burnout wasn't on the cards.

🏆 HICKMAN WINS DIGGERS CUP IN STYLE

On a night of reflection and respect, honouring the 102,000 Australians who have made the ultimate sacrifice, alongside all current and former members of the Australian Defence Force, Bendigo’s Rusty Hickman delivered a commanding performance to claim the 2026 Diggers Cup in dramatic fashion which also would double up as the Victorian title adding to the 26 year olds state title wins this season in the LS/360 Sprintcar division.

Jordan Rae capped off a consistent and impressive season with a strong second-place finish, while also officially securing the SRA 360/LS Sprintcar Series title, as confirmed by SRA Victoria. In a welcome return to Sprintcar competition, Corey McCullagh rounded out the podium in third.

The Speedcars division provided plenty of excitement, with multiple honours on the line including the Diggers Cup, the Barry Power Classic, and valuable points towards the Brian Linigen Track Championship. Rising star Aston Rodriguez showcased his talent to take the win, finishing ahead of current national champion Kaidon Brown, with Nick Parker completing the podium in third.

Rodriguez also secured a well-deserved Brian Linigen Track Championship on the night, with the championship further highlighted by a random draw of finishing positions receiving a Tyre as prize as part of the championship proceedings.

The future of the sport was also on display, with Cruz Farrell taking out the Junior F500 feature race. Alexis Hart secured second place, while Logan O’Shannassy finished third.

A special mention goes to the Lara RSL Sub-Branch for their support in delivering a moving ANZAC Commemorative Service. We also acknowledge Lara RSL President Marcus McEwen and guest speaker Russell Lowe for their contributions in what was a powerful and fitting start to the evening.

Avalon Raceway extends its sincere thanks to Phil and Shaz Seymour for their ongoing support of the Diggers Cup.

In a fantastic initiative on the night, 12-year-old Emir was the lucky recipient of a brand new bike as part of a special giveaway.

The Avalon Raceway Board and Management would like to thank all drivers and teams for their support throughout the 2025/26 season, along with the fans who have continued to attend and support events trackside.

We look forward to seeing you in season 2026/27
