A snorkel on a 4x4 or bakkie has a few real advantages, especially in South African conditions with dust, rain, and gravel roads.

Main benefits of a snorkel:

💦Better water crossing ability

A snorkel raises the engine’s air intake from inside the wheel arch up to roof height.
That helps prevent water being sucked into the engine during river crossings or heavy rain.
If an engine ingests water, it can cause hydrolock, which can destroy the motor.

💨Cleaner air in dusty condition

Higher air intake = cleaner air.
On gravel roads, convoy driving, game reserves, or overlanding trips, the air near the roof is usually far less dusty than near the wheel arches. That can:

👉Help your air filter last longer
👉Reduce dust entering the intake
👉Potentially improve long-term engine life

❄️Cooler intake air

Roof-height air can sometimes be slightly cooler and cleaner than hot air inside the engine bay.
The performance difference is usually small, but intake consistency can improve.

🌧Better engine protection in heavy rain

A standard intake low in the guard/fender can pull in spray during severe rain or flooding. A snorkel reduces that risk.
