Today is Youth Day — and the perfect day to to recognise the power, potential and importance of young people. And to back practical talent.

In Bloemfontein, Youth Day is being marked in a practical and meaningful way as the Motor Mech Show makes its Free State debut at Martie du Plessis High School.

For many young people, confidence grows when they are given the chance to do, build, repair, test, diagnose and solve.

That is why Motor Mech matters.

• It gives learners a platform to show their skills.
• It helps parents see the value of practical talent.
• It connects schools with workshops, suppliers and industry professionals.
• It opens conversations about real careers in the automotive sector.
• It reminds us that technical ability deserves recognition, support and opportunity.

Through MIWA’s Junior Motor Mech Competition, learners are taking on theoretical and practical challenges that test their focus, technical knowledge and problem-solving ability.

And because the event is held in collaboration with the OFS Veteran Car Club and Cars in the Park, visitors can also experience a special blend of motoring heritage and future skills — a reminder that every industry needs both its history and its next generation.

The Guidelines for Competition in the South African Automotive Aftermarket support consumer choice when it comes to parts. That means it is inaccurate to say that only OEM-branded parts may ever be used if a customer wants to protect their warranty.

But that does not mean anything goes.

Where non-original parts are used, workshops should stick to parts that are appropriate, traceable, reputable and backed by a proper warranty from a trusted supplier. The issue is not branding alone. It is suitability, workmanship and causation.

If a part, or the fitment of that part, causes damage, then the affected warranty claim may be legitimately rejected by the OEM.

That is different from saying a warranty is automatically void the moment a non-OEM-branded part is fitted.

The real questions are:
• Was the correct part used?
• Was it fitted properly?
• Did that part or workmanship actually cause the failure?

I received exceptional service from e-Car Menlyn! Firstly, they managed to assist me on short notice. They kept with their quoted price even though they forgot to add a small detail, which they included and reduced labour to keep to the original quotation. The shuttle driver is extremely friendly and even made an additional stop, on my request, when taking me to work. Everyone was very friendly and helpful, and I would recommend their services.
