ASK BILL: Why do modern vehicles destroy batteries faster?

Modern vehicles ask far more from their batteries than older vehicles did.

Start-stop technology is a major factor. Every time the engine switches off at a traffic light and starts again, the battery is cycled. At the same time, the battery can still be supplying power to lights, infotainment, sensors, climate-control systems and other electronics while the engine is off.

Then there is regenerative braking and intelligent charging. Modern charging systems deliberately move the battery through different states of charge, rather than simply keeping it fully charged. That puts additional demands on battery performance and charge acceptance.

South African conditions can add to the load. High temperatures accelerate battery degradation, while short urban trips and heavy traffic can mean repeated starting and insufficient time for the battery to recover.

This is why modern vehicles increasingly use battery technologies such as EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) and AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat). They are designed to handle greater cycling and electrical demand than conventional batteries.

SOUTH AFRICA’S EV BOOM COULD CHANGE THE ELECTRICITY BUSINESS

South Africa sold 896 new-energy vehicles in 2021.
By 2024, that had increased to 15,611.
In 2025, it reached 16,716.
In the first seven months of 2026, another 16,289 were sold, already 97.5% of the entire 2025 total.

Now follow those numbers into electricity.

At one million fully electric vehicles, annual electricity demand could reach 2.5 to 3 TWh.
At five million, 12.5 to 15 TWh.
At ten million, 25 to 30 TWh.

Then add electric taxis, buses, delivery fleets and commercial vehicles.

South Africa is potentially creating an enormous new electricity market.

That is particularly interesting because supplying electricity in South Africa has not been an easy place to make money. Independent generators have faced regulation, grid constraints, Eskom dominance and difficult project economics.

Electrification changes that equation.

Transport currently consumes enormous amounts of energy through petrol and diesel. As vehicles electrify, a growing share of that demand moves into electricity.

At the same time, households and businesses are installing solar and batteries at scale.

We could therefore see two markets growing together: electricity demand from transport and decentralised electricity supply.

That requires more generation, transmission, distribution, storage and charging infrastructure.

But it also creates millions of new electricity customers buying energy for mobility.

EV growth is much bigger than a motor industry story.

Why is my car battery draining faster after a software update?

Modern cars are computers on wheels. Engine management, transmission, security, central locking, infotainment, climate control and driver-assistance systems can all be controlled by electronic modules running software.

That software is periodically updated. It may happen at a dealership during a service, recall or repair, or remotely through an over-the-air update.

Occasionally, battery problems appear soon afterwards.

When a car is switched off, its electronic systems do not shut down immediately. Control modules finish their tasks and progressively enter low-power “sleep” mode. Once the vehicle is asleep, demand on the 12 V battery should reduce.

A software problem can interfere with that process.

One module may remain awake, repeatedly wake itself or continue communicating with another module. Infotainment, telematics, keyless-entry and other connected systems can remain active when they should be sleeping.

The result is parasitic draw: electrical current continues leaving the battery while the car is parked.

A vehicle may start perfectly after being driven, yet struggle after standing overnight or for several days. An older battery with reduced capacity will show the effects sooner, but even a healthy battery can eventually be discharged by excessive current draw.

If battery trouble begins shortly after software work on the vehicle, tell the technician. The timing is diagnostically useful.

The battery and charging system should be tested. The vehicle's current draw should then be measured after sufficient time for its electronic systems to enter sleep mode.

If consumption remains abnormally high, the source needs to be identified. This may require checking individual modules to determine whether updated software, a configuration problem or another electrical fault is keeping part of the vehicle awake.

Repeated discharge can eventually damage the battery itself.

Replacing the battery without identifying excessive parasitic draw may mean the new battery develops exactly the same problem.

BATTERY MYTH #43: Leaving your headlights on for a few minutes won’t hurt the battery.

Not necessarily.

Modern headlights generally use less power than older systems, especially with LED lighting. So leaving them on for a few minutes with the engine off will not automatically flatten a healthy battery.

But every time you leave the lights on with the engine off, the battery is being discharged. The alternator is not running, so the battery has to supply the power.

A healthy, fully charged battery should have enough reserve to handle a few minutes of headlights without a problem. An older, weak or partly discharged battery has less reserve to start with.

The headlights may also not be the only thing using power. Depending on the vehicle, other electrical systems can remain active while the engine is off.

A few minutes of headlights will not normally damage a healthy battery. But repeated or deeper discharges, especially when the battery is not fully recharged, can contribute to battery wear and reduce its service life.

In a conventional flooded lead-acid battery, the electrolyte is a mixture of sulphuric acid and water. During normal use, charging and discharging help keep that mixture relatively uniform. But when a battery spends long periods sitting partially charged or operating under light charge conditions, the acid can gradually separate from the water.

The heavier, more concentrated acid settles towards the bottom of the battery, while the weaker electrolyte remains near the top.

That is stratification.

Why is it significant?

The battery is no longer working with a consistent electrolyte concentration. The lower part of the battery can become exposed to excessive acid concentration, while the upper part receives too little. Over time, this can contribute to reduced capacity, poor charging performance, sulphation and shorter battery life.

Stratification is particularly relevant in applications where batteries are regularly used but not fully recharged, or where they spend extended periods on low charging currents.

Battery expertise goes further than knowing which battery type an application requires. It means understanding the conditions in which that battery will operate, the demands placed on it and what makes commercial sense for the customer.

Interesting news we came across: Tiger Brands has started moving part of its Albany bakery fleet onto alternative fuels.

Fourteen CNG trucks, one fuelling point at the bakery, and a five-year target to shift 10% of the fleet.

What makes this interesting is that they aren't betting everything on one technology. CNG, electric, hybrid and solar are being tested side by side, on real routes, with real mileage and real operating conditions.

That is probably the right way to approach a transition where nobody has all the answers yet.

Commercial fleets are where these technologies get properly tested. A CNG truck brings different requirements from an electric delivery vehicle. A hybrid introduces different charging behaviour, electrical loads and potential failure points again.

And that changes what happens downstream.

The fitment centre that once dealt predominantly with conventional lead-acid batteries is increasingly dealing with a much wider range of vehicle technologies and electrical systems.

Technicians need broader electrical knowledge. Diagnostics need to keep pace. For fitment centres, that means understanding a wider range of battery and electrical system requirements across the vehicles coming through the bay.
