And just like everything around us starts waking up and growing, September is a lovely reminder that children are constantly developing too. đŸŒ±

This month at HN Kinderkinetics, we’re focusing on Social & Emotional Skills, Reaction Time, Cognitive Skills and Reflexes.

These aren’t skills that only matter during a Kinderkinetics session. They’re there when your child takes turns with a friend, reacts when a ball comes flying their way, works out how to solve a problem, or instinctively catches themselves when they stumble.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll unpack each one and show you what these skills can look like in everyday childhood.

Just like the Spring blossoms, development takes nurturing and time.

You scan the room...and spot it immediately. Sound familiar?

Children don’t always struggle because they’re not looking. Sometimes their brains are still learning how to pick out one important object from everything else around it.

This skill is called Figure Ground Perception.

Think about how often children use it every day:
🔍 Finding their water bottle among everyone else’s.
🎒 Spotting their school bag in a row of identical bags.
📖 Holding the correct line while reading.
đŸ§© Looking for the right puzzle piece.

At HN Kinderkinetics, we develop this skill through movement-based games where children search, sort, identify and react while staying active. They’re having fun but they’re also learning how to focus on what’s important while filtering out distractions.

Movement Myth Monday

For many children, movement is how they make sense of the world around them. Running, jumping, climbing and spinning can help them regulate their bodies, improve focus and process the sights, sounds and sensations they experience every day.

That’s why you’ll often see children moving when they’re excited, nervous, concentrating or even trying to calm themselves down.

Movement isn’t always a distraction. It can be a child’s way of learning, exploring and self-regulating.

Ever wondered how your child catches a ball?

Seems simple, right? But in just a few seconds your child’s brain is doing something incredible.

👀 Their eyes follow the ball.
🧠 Their brain judges its speed and direction.
🙌 Their hands move into position.
⚖ Their body adjusts to stay balanced.

All of this happens almost instantly.

This is called Sensory Motor Integration. The brain’s ability to take in information from the senses and turn it into coordinated movement.

At HN Kinderkinetics, we strengthen this skill through games and activities that encourage children to move, think and react at the same time. Whether they’re catching, balancing, jumping or navigating an obstacle course, their brains are constantly learning how to organise information more efficiently.

What looks like “just playing” is actually helping children build the important connections between their brain and body that they’ll rely on every day.

This skill is called BODY AWARENESS.

It’s what helps children understand where their bodies are in space and how to move with confidence and control.

At HN Kinderkinetics, we develop body awareness through activities like balancing, climbing, crawling, rolling, jumping and obstacle courses.

While children are having fun, they’re learning how their bodies move, where they are in relation to the world around them, and how to use them more effectively.
