Month-end on Main Road, Diep River: one person collects a trailer for the boxes and the couch, and Johan heads out with a mini skip for everything that isn’t making the move.

Same address, two services. Mr Trailer Hire is collection only: you pick the trailer up, no deposit, and bring it back the same day or by 09:00 the next morning by arrangement. Mr Skip Hire delivers: the skip comes to your gate, you fill it, and Johan collects it.

Here’s a skip question I didn’t know was a question: do you need to be home when it’s delivered?

Ideally, yes. Johan explained it to me this week: there’s paperwork to sign when the skip arrives at your gate, so it’s best if someone’s there. If you’ll be at work, WhatsApp him when you book and you’ll plan the day together.

After that it’s simple. Johan drops the skip at your gate, you fill it at your own pace with household junk, garden refuse, rubble or recycling, and he collects it when you’re done. Per cycle (1 to 3 days) or by the month.

Nobody frames a photo of their renovation rubble. It still has to go somewhere.

This mini skip has done its job: filled in the driveway and now on its way out. We deliver the skip to your gate, you fill it as the work goes, and we collect it when you're done. It takes household junk and garden refuse too, and you hire it per cycle (1 to 3 days) or by the month.

Some jobs won’t fit in a car, a bakkie or a small trailer. This one’s for those.

The 4m double axle is the biggest trailer we hire out: 4m x 1.8m, barred sides, two axles and up to 2000kg of load. It’s the one for full garden clear-outs, big moves and the old paving coming up.

Same rules as every Mr Trailer: your standard Code B licence covers it, there’s no deposit, card is fine, and you bring it back the same day, or by 09:00 the next morning by arrangement. R600 a day, weekends and public holidays included.

Friday on Main Road, Diep River, and the yard’s full of trailers waiting for weekend jobs.

Mesh for garden refuse, barred-sided for furniture and boxes. Your standard Code B licence covers every one of them, there’s no deposit, and we’re open on Sunday at no extra cost. The big double axle gets its own post on Tuesday.

Do you need a special licence to tow a trailer?

Short answer: no. The standard Code B licence already in your wallet covers every trailer we hire out: the 2.4m mesh, the 3m barred-sided, the galvanised mesh, the Town & Country 200, and even the 4m double axle, which carries up to 2000kg.

If you're not sure which trailer suits your job, tell the branch what you're moving and they'll match you to the right one. No deposit, and you collect from whichever branch is closest.

School went back this week, and if your house is anything like most after a holiday, there's a pile somewhere that didn't get dealt with.

I'd never thought about how a skip gets to someone's gate until I started working with Mr Skip, so here's how a clear-out works, start to finish. The bakkie leaves our Diep River yard with an empty mini skip. We drop it at your gate. You fill it at your own pace with household junk, garden refuse, rubble or recycling. Then we collect it and take it away. Hire it per cycle (1 to 3 days) or by the month.

When I started this job I didn't understand why anyone would hire a trailer for a Facebook Marketplace pickup.

Then I watched someone try to fit a corner unit into a Golf.

Turns out: R280 for the day, no deposit, Diep River or Tokai or Kenilworth, whichever's on the way home from the seller. Standard Code B licence covers most. Back the same day, or by 09:00 next morning if the pickup runs late.

Half my week is calls from people about to attempt this.
