STAY GRATEFUL & DO NOT COMPLAIN:
Marriage Thought:
To all husbands and wives
To keep a relationship vibrant, you must actively invest in your spouse and avoid falling into routines that cause stagnation.
Subject: Breaking the Routine – Actively Investing in Your Marriage
Scripture Reference: “Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that He has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun.” – Ecclesiastes 9:9
Introduction
To all husbands and wives gathered here, think back to the early days of your relationship. Remember the excitement, the late-night conversations, the effort you put into choosing the right outfit, and the intentional plans you made just to spend an hour together. You were actively pursuing one another.
Fast forward to tonight.
For many couples, that pursuit has turned into a routine.
The routine turns into predictability, and predictability often breeds stagnation. A vibrant marriage does not happen by accident. It is the result of continuous, intentional investment.
The Danger of the Comfort Zone
In marriage, it is easy to mistake comfort for stability. While stability is a blessing, absolute comfort can lead to passivity. We begin to treat our spouse like a permanent fixture in the house—like a piece of furniture that we expect to always be there, rather than a living, breathing soul that needs care, attention, and cultivation.
Stagnation happens when we stop dating our spouse. It happens when our conversations shift from our hopes, dreams, and feelings to purely administrative logistics:
Who is picking up the groceries? Did you pay the electric bill? What time do the kids need to be at practice? When logistics replace intimacy, the relationship loses its vibrancy.
Active Investment vs. Passive Existence
God did not design marriage to be a contract of convenience; He designed it to be a covenant of companionship.
A covenant requires active investment.
To invest means to give your time, your energy, and your emotional focus, expecting that it will yield a richer relationship. It means:
Choosing curiosity over assumption: Never stop learning your spouse. Their tastes, dreams, and fears change over time. Ask them new questions.
Prioritizing quality time: If your spouse only gets the "leftovers" of your energy at the end of a long workday, the relationship will starve. Give them your best energy, not just your remaining exhaustion.
Practicing intentional appreciation: Actively look for things your spouse is doing right and voice your gratitude.
Conclusion
Husbands and wives, do not let your marriage drift into autopilot.
A ship on autopilot can maintain a course, but it cannot navigate a storm, and it certainly cannot find new joy. Wake up every day with the determination to bless, surprise, and serve your spouse. Break the routines that cause stagnation, and choose to actively love the one God has given you.
A Prayer for Husbands and Wives
Heavenly Father,
We come before You tonight to lift up every marriage represented here. We thank You for the sacred gift of holy matrimony and for the partner You have placed by our side.
Lord, forgive us for the times we have taken our spouses for granted. Forgive us for letting the busy schedules, the stress of life, and the daily grinds crowd out the love, honor, and cherish we promised before You. We confess that we have sometimes allowed stagnation to creep into our homes, settling for comfortable routines instead of vibrant connection.
We ask that You reignite the spark in our hearts tonight. Give us the wisdom to see where we have become passive, and give us the energy to actively invest in our marriage. Help us to speak words of life, kindness, and appreciation to our spouses. Teach us how to listen deeply, forgive quickly, and love selflessly, just as Christ loves the Church.
Deliver us from the trap of routine. Help us to create new moments of joy, laughter, and intimacy together. May our homes be places of peace, and may our relationships reflect Your faithful, enduring love to the world around us.
In Jesus' Name We Pray,
Amen.
