🌀 What Does a Torque Converter Actually Do?
If you drive a vehicle with a traditional automatic transmission, there is an important component working behind the scenes: the torque converter.
But what exactly does it do?
A torque converter is located between the engine and automatic transmission. Its primary job is to transfer the engine’s torque to the transmission while allowing the engine and transmission to operate at different speeds.
Unlike a manual transmission, which uses a clutch to connect and disconnect the engine from the transmission, a traditional automatic transmission uses a torque converter to transfer power through transmission fluid.
The torque converter also serves an important purpose when your vehicle is stopped. It allows the engine to continue running while the vehicle is stationary, even while the transmission is in Drive. This is one of the reasons you can sit at a stoplight in Drive without the engine stalling.
Inside the torque converter are several components that work together, including the impeller, turbine, and stator. These components use the movement of transmission fluid to transfer and multiply torque when the conditions require additional pulling power, such as when accelerating from a stop.
Many modern torque converters also contain a lockup clutch. Once driving conditions allow, this clutch can create a more direct mechanical connection between the engine and transmission, helping reduce energy loss and improve efficiency during steady-speed driving.
In other words, the torque converter does much more than simply “connect the engine to the transmission.”
It helps transfer engine torque, multiply torque when needed, and allow the engine to keep running while the vehicle is stopped, all while contributing to smooth operation.
That small component plays a pretty big role in how a traditional automatic transmission works. 🔧
