Older vehicles ask for a different kind of attention. It's less about what a scanner can tell you and more about understanding how the thing was built and how it's meant to run.

The scanner's the easy part. Plug it in, it throws a code, tells you where the trouble is. Where it stops helping is the next question — alright, but why?

That same code might be a tired sensor, a corroded connector, or a wire rubbed bare somewhere you'd never think to look. The tool won't tell you which one. That part comes from running enough of these down to know where to start.

Get the cause right, and the fix takes care of itself.

An oil change is the most routine thing we do. Nothing fancy about it.

But the car comes up on the lift to get it done, and that puts the whole underside right in front of us. So we don't just drain and fill and send it down the road — we'll take a look while we've got it up there. If something's wearing out or working loose, that's when we'll catch it.

Either way, it leaves with fresh oil — and you'll hear about anything we found.

Before anything gets replaced, it gets tested. Hooking up the scope, watching live data, reading what the car is actually doing instead of guessing at it. That's how you find the real problem the first time — not by throwing parts at it and hoping.

There's a Porsche up on the bench this week, and Joe's working through the timing chains.

The plastic guides that hold the cam chains in place wear down over time. Once they do, you'll hear a slight rattle from the top end and the car sets camshaft deviation codes — the kind of thing that sends people in circles if they don't know what they're looking at. Joe found the worn guide and went to work. To get to it, the whole engine and transaxle come out of the car.

It's involved work, and the kind of job a lot of shops around here would rather pass on. We're not other shops. These cars are something we enjoy getting into.
