Got a 6L80E acting up? It might not need what you're afraid it needs.
The 6L80E is in millions of '07–'20 GM trucks and SUVs, and we see them constantly. Some come in shuddering and slipping and end up fixed with the current dealer programming — the unit was fine, the software was behind. Others have a torque converter that's done while the rest of the transmission is still good, so we replace the converter instead of the whole thing. And yes, some genuinely need the rebuild — and when they do, we've got 6L80E units on the shelf, not on backorder.
The point is that all three of those are different repairs at very different prices, and you can't tell which one you're looking at from the symptom. A general shop sees a slip and quotes the biggest job. We do one thing, all day, so we check the cheap causes before we ever talk teardown.
