🔧 **WOULDN’T YA KNOW WEDNESDAY** 🔧
# # # 🚨 MYTH: “The scanner says it’s the sensor, so I just need a new sensor.”
**Wouldn’t ya know… it’s not always that simple.**
When your check engine light comes on, your vehicle’s computer stores a **trouble code** that helps point us in the direction of the problem.
But here’s the part that gets misunderstood:
👉 **A trouble code is a CLUE — not a diagnosis.**
Let’s say a code points toward an oxygen sensor. Does that mean the oxygen sensor is bad?
**Maybe.**
But it could also be detecting a problem caused by something else, such as:
* An exhaust leak
* A vacuum leak
* Damaged wiring or a poor electrical connection
* An air/fuel mixture problem
* A misfire
* Another component causing the sensor to report readings outside the expected range
Think of your vehicle’s sensors as **messengers**. Sometimes the messenger is the problem.
Other times, the messenger is doing its job perfectly and telling you:
**“Hey, something over here is screwed up.”**
That’s why simply reading a code and replacing whatever part happens to be mentioned can get expensive FAST.
You replace the sensor.
The light comes back on.
You replace another part.
The light comes back on.
Congratulations — you’ve discovered what we lovingly call the **Parts Cannon.** 💸💥
Proper diagnostics means using that trouble code as a starting point, then testing and inspecting the system to figure out **WHY the computer set the code in the first place.**
And yes, those inexpensive code scanners are handy tools. We actually like them.
But if a $30 scanner could accurately diagnose every vehicle problem…
**we've wasted an absolutely ridiculous amount of money on diagnostic equipment and technician training.** 😂
**Wouldn’t ya know — sometimes the sensor isn’t lying. It’s tattling.**
