Quick progress update on the new shop. Painting in the build-out has been completed, and the first of the warehouse walls got some color on it, too. I decided to go with a two-tone shop to help cut the glare off the vertical surfaces and make the work area a little bit easier to keep clean. The upper portion will the same color as the walls of the build-out for both continuity and light distribution. The T-bar ceiling grid is mostly in place, so now the electricians can install the balance of the office lighting. The tile in the showers has proven to be a bit of a PITA as most of the tiles in most of the boxes we’re receiving are broken and unusable. It’s a solvable problem, but it’s really slowed the progress on the bathrooms. Looking ahead, the warehouse paint should be completed in the next few weeks, and then it’s time to start grinding and leveling the floor for polishing and sealing. Once the warehouse floor is complete we can start moving in some of the new shop infrastructure items. It won’t be long now…

Every day I’m seeing new modes of failure. The cars are taking longer and longer to repair because of obscure things like what we’re seeing here. So it’s not that I’ve forgotten about you, and it’s not that I don’t want to work on your car, it’s just that stuff like this takes longer and longer to diagnose and repair and there are only so many hours in the day that we can work.

Luckily I have a vast store of old parts, so the wait time for a new squirter is 1min versus a day or two, but the fact remains that these old cars aren’t getting any younger, the new parts aren’t on the level they need to be to repair the old cars properly, and there are fewer and fewer mechanics (not “techs”) who are capable of actually fixing these things properly.

Progress continues unabated on the new shop. The exhaust extraction system has been delivered, the HVAC ducting is mostly installed (needs to be finish-installed in the rooms), and the taping/mudding of the walls is well underway. Both showers are drywalled and sealed, the exterior of the building has been 90% painted, and new LED exterior lighting fixtures are ordered. Interior paint colors/textures/sheens have been chosen, as have the flooring, bathroom, and wall edge materials. I was really hoping that we would be ready to start moving in by today, my birthday, but if this New Building Saga has taught me anything it’s “delayed gratification.” Maybe now that I’m 46 I’ll learn that damned lesson. Or, maybe not… 🤣🤣

I got down and dirty with my first 4-cam engine in the summer of 1998 … and I completely botched it. 🤣🤣 Al Cadrobbi handed me a bunch of shims and some cams and told me to do the cam timing; I completely screwed the pooch. I didn’t break anything and I didn’t get fired, but it was an eye opening experience for me and gave me a whole new perspective on and respect for the Fuhrmann 4-cam motors. Back then one of these engines was worth around 50K as a semi-rebuildable core. Today? Yikes. Anyway, I learned back then just how much care and precision these motors require and now, 30yrs later, I’m being asked to care for them. Pretty cool, man. Pretty cool.

A quick once-over for a factory hot rod headed north for the party next week. Subtle OEM performance bump with a Ruf 5-spd box to improve around town use. Changed out the steering column bushing, topped off the oil, charged up the AC, and touched up the alignment. She is ready to rock and roll.

BUILDING UPDATE: Progress on the new shop continues unabated. We’ve got HVAC ducting and drywall up, and the inspector has signed off on all the mechanical, plumbing, and electrical. Interior walls are being closed up, the drywall is being taped and mudded, the exterior of the building is being repainted, and the exterior lighting fixtures are being replaced. I still need to settle on final interior colors (shades of colors, mostly), but I’ve decided to go with a two-tone interior for the workshop area.

Shower and bathroom tiles have all been chosen and/or purchased, as have the flooring materials for the office spaces. All the plumbing fixtures (sinks and faucets and stuff) are incoming.

There’s still quite a bit to accomplish before we can move in, but the vision is really starting to come into focus and forward progress is being made every day.

This was one of “those days.” The weather was perfect, Willow added an awning for shade at The Streets, the cars all ran perfect (996 cup, Alfa GTA, and GT4 CSes), I got to hang out with some great friends, there was excellent food, and we got to classify it as a “work day.”

The 996 (which was restored by Scan Automotive [who has another one for sale, btw]) ran flawlessly on its first outing with me since I bought it back at the first Broad Arrow Auctions at Air/Water. It’s easy to drive, communicative, fun, and makes all the right noises. It’s a real deal race car and the fact that it has a great history - and a great livery - only make it cooler. And it felt great to give the keys to my friend Matt Farah and let him rip it around for a few sessions. I think he enjoyed himself.

Today was one of “those days.” It was a perfect SoCal Motorsport day and I couldn’t ask for anything more. So glad we were all together today. My tank is full.

A general cross section of my life for the last 10 days … cars (obviously), watches with a friend, delicious dining experiences with a friend, and a good deed helping a broken down vintage Toyota get out of traffic lanes on a scorching hot 5 freeway by Dodger Stadium. It’s Thursday and the weekend is coming up quickly. Go be awesome…next week is gonna be FUN.
