🔋 CRANKING BATTERY VS DEEP CYCLE - WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Ralph answers a question he gets asked a lot: what’s the difference between these two battery types?

Deep Cycle Battery:
Made to be drawn down and recharged repeatedly. This is what you want for accessories - your stereo, trolling motor, boat accessories. You can draw a lot of power, charge it back up, and do it over and over. That’s the “deep cycle” part.

Cranking Battery:
Made to give you that strong boost of power to start your engine. Especially important if you’ve got a bigger horsepower motor. A deep cycle battery won’t give you enough power to fire up a larger engine.

The cranking battery gets charged back up by the alternator while you’re running the engine. You can also charge it at home with a battery charger if needed.

The important part: They have different amperages and specifications based on your motor. Make sure you’ve got the right one for what you’re doing.

BOW = front of the boat
STERN = rear of the boat

You might never need to know it, but if someone says “go grab that from the stern,” at least now you’ll know where to go!

🔌 LITTLE THINGS, BIG DIFFERENCE: CARRY A SPARE DRAIN PLUG!

Here’s a simple thing that can save your whole day on the water: always have a spare drain plug in your boat.

There are two different styles - one with built-in threads and one that expands. Know which type your boat needs and keep both styles handy.

Why? Imagine getting to the lake and you can’t find your drain plug. Or you’re there and someone else can’t find theirs. Without it, you can’t run your boat. No exceptions.

Ralph’s point: don’t let something this simple ruin a day on the water. Buy one extra drain plug, put it away where you know where it is, and move on.

🔧 TRAILER BEARING SERVICE - DON’T NEGLECT THIS!

Ralph walks you through something that’s easy to forget but can cause real problems: servicing your trailer bearings.

Neglect this and you could have a bearing failure on the highway. That can cost you an axle, destroy a tire, and potentially cause an accident that hurts you or someone else.

How to do it (if your trailer has a rubber plug):

Remove the rubber plug on the outside of the axle with a screwdriver. This exposes the grease fitting in the middle of the axle. Grease travels through the axle to a weep hole on the back.

Put your grease gun in and start pumping. New grease forces the old grease out through that weep hole. Stop when you see new grease coming out.

Clean out the cap inside with a screwdriver tip to make room for air expansion. Put a brand new rubber plug back in (not the old cracked one).

You’re good for another year.

It’s a simple maintenance task that takes 10 minutes and can prevent serious problems down the road.

🦶 LITTLE THINGS, BIG DIFFERENCE: WHAT’S A “HOT FOOT”?

You hear the term on bass boats and high-performance boats, but what is it actually?

A hot foot is a foot accelerator. Instead of controlling your throttle by hand like most boats, you operate it with your foot. On the floor of the boat, there’s a metal piece hooked to the accelerator cable. You give it gas and slow down - all with your foot.

Why does this matter? Because it means you can keep BOTH hands on the steering wheel while you’re controlling your speed. That’s safer, especially when you’re running at higher speeds or navigating tricky water.

It’s a small feature that makes a real difference in how you operate the boat!

Starting at the bow, you’ve got a Garmin Force trolling motor (24 volts) with electric steering - super quiet on the water. The bow panel has your trim switch and navigation lights. The recessed foot pedal means no awkward bent-knee positioning while you’re fishing - just comfortable all-day fishing.

⛵ LITTLE THINGS, BIG DIFFERENCE: PORT VS STARBOARD!
Can't remember which side is which? Here's the trick Ralph shared:
Port has FOUR letters. Left has FOUR letters. So PORT = LEFT.
That means STARBOARD = RIGHT.
Simple as that!

🚨 TURN OFF YOUR ENGINE WHEN PEOPLE ARE SWIMMING!
Here's a safety rule that could save a life: When you stop and people are going to swim, turn off your engine. Period.
It's not just about the propeller - it's about carbon monoxide. You can't see it, you can't taste it, you can't smell it. But it's DANGEROUS.
Here's the reality: Whether you've got an outboard, inboard, jet engine, or Merc cruiser - they ALL burn gasoline and produce exhaust fumes. Even if the engine is in neutral, those fumes are being released.
Carbon monoxide can cause someone to pass out - and around water, passing out means drowning.
Don't take that chance with your family. Don't gamble with a life. Turn off the engine when you stop and people are swimming.
It's not worth it.
