The 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback. 289 cubic inches, long hood, short deck, and that unbroken roofline running straight from the windshield to the tail.
Dealers took around 22,000 orders on the very first day. Ford had to convert two extra plants just to keep the line moving.
The Fastback was always the rarest of the three 1965 body styles. That is exactly why clean original ones are worth so much today.
And here is the real legacy. Before this car, the pony car class did not exist. Every rival Detroit built after 1964 was an answer to the Mustang.

In 1957, the fastest production car on Earth was a Mercedes. And it used aircraft technology to get there. 🀍πŸ”₯

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster. Three litres, six cylinders, and the first direct fuel injection system ever fitted to a production automobile.
That injected inline-six made so much power that Mercedes had to tilt the entire engine onto its side, roughly 45 degrees, just to fit it under that low bonnet.
Top speed was over 160 miles per hour. In 1957. When most cars on the road could barely manage 90.
The Roadster replaced the famous Gullwing in 1957, giving up the upward-opening doors but gaining a redesigned rear suspension that made it genuinely safer to drive fast.
