The Iroquois Steeplechase joins the racing community in mourning the passing of Irv Naylor, a longtime friend of the Iroquois and one of steeplechase racing's greatest supporters.

A seven-time National Steeplechase Association leading owner and the sport's all-time leader in purse earnings, Irv celebrated three victories in our feature race with Tax Ruling in 2010 and 2011 and Rawnaq in 2016. His remarkable racing career also included three Eclipse Award champions.

Beyond his accomplishments, Irv was a familiar face and friend at race meets across the country. His dedication to the sport, generosity, and friendship will be greatly missed.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, Diane, and the entire Naylor family.

Nashville has lost a true original, and the Iroquois Steeplechase has lost a longtime friend.

We are saddened by the passing of Jack Cawthon, founder of the iconic Jack’s Bar-B-Que and a man who helped shape Nashville’s history.

Jack was also part of our Steeplechase family for many years. As one of our early event caterers and a longtime volunteer Patrol Judge, he generously gave his time and talents to support the traditions of our event.

We are grateful for Jack’s contributions to the Iroquois Steeplechase and the lasting impact he made throughout our community.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Cawthon family, his friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
