The 1939 “Bu-Merc” Racing Sports Car came off the museum floor of the Revs Institute and roared to life during the ARCA exhibition laps at . It’s literally one of a kind!

This Briggs Cunningham Special was present at both the last ARCA race in 1940 and the inaugural Grand Prix at Watkins Glen in 1948. Cunningham modified the running chassis of a 1939 Buick Century with the help of Phil Shafer, whose own modified Buicks earned him top-ten finishes in the Indianapolis 500. They increased the compression on the 8-cylinder engine and repositioned it lower and further back in the chassis. Cunningham then added the body from a Mercedes SSK.

The Bu-Merc’s first entry was at the New York World’s Fairgrounds on October 6, 1940. It was scheduled to be the final ARCA event for the season. Unknown to the entrants at the time, it would be ARCA’s last race. Fittingly, Cunningham decided to bring the Bu-Merc out for the first SCCA Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. He finished second to Frank Griswold, Jr. (who won in an Alfa Romeo very similar to the 8C 2900B also here on display).

📰 More than 1,200 rare and vintage cars and motorcycles filled Lime Rock Park on Sunday as Historic Festival 44 traded the sounds of vintage racing for one of the largest celebrations of automotive history ever held at The Park.

At the center of this year’s celebration was Alfa Romeo, the featured marque of Historic Festival 44. Six Concours classes were dedicated to different generations of Alfa Romeo, complementing the largest gathering of significant Alfa Romeos ever assembled in one place.
