DENT REPAIR BREAKDOWNS | Driveway Repaint vs PDR: the full breakdown (Parts 1–2) 🚗

Somebody dings your door. A mobile painter says he'll come to your house and repaint it for $500. The dent guy says $750. So why would you ever pay the dent guy more? Because those are two totally different services, and they do two totally different things to the value of your car.

Paintless dent repair moves the metal back and leaves the factory paint alone. A repaint covers it up, and once factory paint is gone you can't get it back. Every dealer and auction buyer carries a paint gauge that finds a repaint in about two seconds.

And spray painting cars is regulated. The EPA's auto body refinishing rule covers mobile painters by name: a spray booth or a mobile enclosure with filters, the right spray gun, a trained and certified painter. Most driveway painters I've seen just tape it off and spray in the open air, and you can see it: dust, pollen, bugs and fish eyes dried into the clear.

Put it like a dealership would. The GM's painter says he'll do it for free. His dent guy says he can get it 90% for a thousand bucks. He picks the dent guy every single time, because the cost of a bad repaint shows up at the auction block.

Same if your car is leased: Toyota's own lease guide lists poorly done repairs as excess wear, so a cheap repaint can mean paying twice.

Not every mobile painter is bad. So ask: Who's actually showing up at my house? Do you have real local reviews? Do you paint in an enclosure? You're not paying more for the same thing. You're paying for something you can't get back once it's gone.

Protect yourself the rest of the way. Get an LLC so a business lawsuit doesn't reach your house and your savings. Get the right insurance: a regular general liability policy usually won't cover a customer's car while it's in your care, custody or control. For that you need garage keepers coverage.

Number one, the one that'll put you out of business fastest: don't report your cash. I was a senior chaplain at Florida State Prison. Plenty of people end up inside because of decisions they thought were small.

Retail PDR is a cash business. Do it for ten years with a truck, a house and a boat, reporting nothing but the checks from two dealers, and the numbers don't add up. The IRS can count. An honest mistake gets you penalties and interest. Knowingly hiding income year after year is willful evasion, a felony.

Report every cash job. Log it and deposit it. Set aside for self-employment tax, make your quarterly payments, and get a real accountant before your first good year, not after your first letter.

Number two: spend the harvest. Dent work comes in waves. A hailstorm hits and you make more in a month than some people make in a quarter, so you buy the truck, the toys, the vacation. Then the storms dry up and you realize the good months were supposed to pay for the bad ones.

A JPMorgan Chase study found the typical small business has only about 27 days of cash on hand. After Hurricane Irma my work stopped cold, and the only thing that carried me was what I'd already saved. Put money away every good month like it's a bill you owe yourself.

Number four: sign a shop lease before you can fix dents. Now you've got a bill every single month whether you fixed one car or fifty, usually with your own name on the guarantee. You've built a cage before you built a business. Go mobile first: used car lots, dealerships, auctions. That's where you learn the metal and the business. When you're turning people away, then think about a shop.

Number three: run down your competition. The customer hears drama. They don't want to join your feud, they want their car fixed. When you attack, they start defending the guy you attacked. Show your before and afters and let your work do the talking.

Number six: pay somebody else to do the things only you should do. Your website and your Google ads are your phone. They decide whether it rings tomorrow. One study of 500 small-business ad accounts found them wasting about a quarter of their budget, and fewer than half tracked whether the ads brought customers. You don't have to be an expert. You have to be the owner who knows what's going on.

Number five: follow the loudest guy on the internet. Before you hand anybody your money, ask one question: is their business fixing dents, or is their business you? Learn technique from good teachers. Learn business from people who've made payroll, paid the taxes and survived the slow season.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics followed every business that opened in 2013: after ten years, about one in three were still open. Dent techs are not special.

Number seven: try to turn it into a big corporation. PDR is a craft. The customer is paying for your hands and your eyes. The minute you turn that into a machine with dozens of employees, you're selling other people's skill and making payroll whether it hailed or not.

Stay small, stay excellent, stay profitable. A one-man shop with no overhead and a full schedule beats a 20-man shop that's one bad season from shutting the doors.
