Every engine on this page either won or worked. The Hemi won Daytona. The 427 FE won Le Mans. The DT466 worked for fifty years. The Ford 300 worked for thirty-one. The Novi V8 did neither. It was the fastest engine at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a quarter century and never won the race. Not once. Twenty-five years of qualifying faster than everything else on the track and twenty-five years of breaking, crashing, or running out of luck before the checkered flag. The most powerful engine in the field. The fastest car in qualifying. The loudest thing on the Brickyard. And zero victories. The Novi is the greatest engine that never won the race it was built to win.
Lew Welch from Novi, Michigan, a small town outside Detroit, commissioned the engine in 1940. He wanted a supercharged V8 for the Indianapolis 500 under the three-liter formula. He brought the idea to Bud Winfield, whose brother Ed had taught Ed Iskenderian how to build a cam grinding machine. Winfield designed the engine. Leo Goossen, the most prolific racing engine designer in American history, drew the blueprints. Fred Offenhauser, whose inline four already dominated Indianapolis, built it. Three legends of American engine building collaborated on one engine. 181 cubic inches. DOHC. Sixteen valves. A centrifugal supercharger mounted at the front of the engine, belt driven from the crankshaft, spinning at five times engine speed. At 8,000 RPM, the supercharger impeller was turning at 42,000 RPM. Boost pressure: up to 30 PSI. Output in 1941: 450 HP from 181 cubic inches. The typical Offenhauser four-cylinder made 300. The Novi made fifty percent more from the same displacement. In its final form under Andy Granatelli's ownership in the 1960s, the Novi produced 837 HP.
The sound was the legend before the results were. The centrifugal supercharger at 42,000 RPM produced a shriek that was unlike any other engine at Indianapolis. Not a rumble. Not a roar. A scream. A high-pitched, mechanical howl that climbed in frequency as the engine accelerated and hit a note at full boost that spectators described as physically painful from the grandstands. Speedway records confirmed that attendance increased whenever a Novi was scheduled to qualify. People bought tickets to hear the engine. Not to see it win. Because it never did.
The problem was always the same: the power exceeded the chassis. In 1941, the Novi was installed in a 1935 Harry Miller front-drive chassis that was never designed for 450 HP. The car was violently fast in a straight line and nearly uncontrollable in the corners. Ralph Hepburn crashed one at speed. Duke Nalon crashed one in 1949 when a fuel tank burst and the car became a fireball on the backstretch. Chet Miller was killed in a Novi in 1953. The engine made power that no chassis of its era could safely contain. When the chassis improved, reliability failed. When reliability improved, the rules changed. Andy Granatelli campaigned the Novis through the 1960s with drivers including Bobby Unser, Jim Hurtubise, and Art Malone. The results were always the same: fastest in qualifying, gone before the finish.
Only about two dozen Novi engines were ever built across twenty-five years of competition. The engine was named after Welch's hometown: Novi, Michigan. A small town gave its name to the most famous engine that never won. The Offy won the 500 dozens of times. The Ford DOHC won it seven times. The Cosworth DFX won it ten consecutive years. The Novi won it zero times and is remembered more vividly than most of them. Because the Novi proved that winning is not the only way an engine becomes legendary. Sometimes the engine that almost wins, that qualifies fastest and then breaks, that sounds like nothing else on Earth and then falls silent before the checkered flag, earns a place in memory that victory cannot provide. The crowd remembers the scream. Not the silence that followed it.
