Do you REALLY need an intercooler on your diesel engine? 🧐💨

When your turbo compresses air, it generates HEAT. And hot air is less dense, meaning less oxygen fits into your cylinders at the same boost pressure.

That’s where your intercooler comes in!

By cooling that compressed air, we can pack MORE oxygen into the cylinders, allowing us to burn MORE fuel efficiently and make MORE POWER. 💪

More boost doesn’t always mean more oxygen. Air density matters!

🚨 DIESEL PARTS INDUSTRY HACK: ORDER REMAN, GET BRAND NEW?! 🤯

Ever ordered a remanufactured part, opened the box, and found what appears to be a BRAND NEW OEM component?

Believe it or not, this happens more often than you might think! 👀

Here’s why manufacturers sometimes put BRAND NEW parts in REMAN boxes:

💰 IT’S ALL ABOUT THE CORES!

Manufacturers want those old parts back, and there are a couple of reasons why:

🔧 1. Building a Reman Program: Manufacturers need a supply of used cores to establish or expand their remanufacturing programs. Selling new parts through a reman exchange program helps get those cores flowing back.

🚫 2. Controlling the Core Supply: Every core returned to the OEM is one less core available to independent remanufacturers. Controlling that supply can give manufacturers a competitive advantage in the aftermarket.

💡 THE RESULT? You could potentially receive a brand-new OEM component for the price of a remanufactured one!

Now, this doesn’t mean EVERY reman box contains a new part, and you shouldn’t assume it does. But it’s a real practice worth understanding.

👇 Have you ever opened a reman box and found a brand-new part inside?

🔥 The MOST IMPORTANT gauge on your diesel truck might not be your boost gauge!

Your pyrometer (EGT gauge) measures exhaust gas temperature, giving you a window into just how hard your engine and turbocharger are working.

High EGTs can mean serious trouble, especially when pulling heavy loads, climbing long grades, or running a tuned engine.

Excessive exhaust temperatures can damage pistons, exhaust valves, and turbochargers. And by the time you notice a problem, the damage may already be done.

🌡️ Boost tells you pressure. EGT tells you HEAT. Both matter, but if you’re working your diesel hard, you NEED to know your exhaust temperatures!

⚠️ And remember, probe placement matters! Pre-turbo and post-turbo EGT readings are NOT the same.

🚨 WHICH ONE IS GENUINE OEM?! 🤔

Same part. Different part numbers. Different boxes. Different prices. 🤯

Here’s something a lot of people don’t realize…

Holset is the OEM turbocharger supplier for Cummins, and Holset is actually owned by Cummins!

That means when you’re shopping for a genuine turbocharger actuator, you might see part numbers ending in H, HX, RX, or NX, and the part could arrive in either a Cummins or Holset box.

💡 Here’s the kicker: BOTH can be 100% genuine OEM products!

Different suffixes can indicate different product classifications, including new and remanufactured components, but a different suffix or box doesn’t automatically mean you’re getting an aftermarket part.

Don’t confuse different packaging with different manufacturers!

👇 Did you know this, or have you been paying extra for a different box?

📈 Compressor maps don’t have to be complicated! 💨

Pressure ratios and pounds per minute of airflow might look confusing, but what if we converted them into numbers you’re already familiar with?

✅ Pressure Ratio → Boost PSI
✅ Airflow (lbs/min) → Estimated Horsepower

Using a little basic math, we can take a compressor map and turn it into something much easier to understand!

In this video, we’re breaking down how to plot points on a compressor map so you can better understand what a turbocharger is actually capable of.

💡 Remember, 1 lb/min of airflow ≈ 10 HP is a general rule of thumb, not a guarantee!

👇 Have you ever actually used a compressor map to size a turbo?

🚨 BOOST CREEP: When your turbo has a mind of its own! 💨

You asked for 30 PSI… but your turbo decided 45 sounded better. 😂

So what causes boost creep?

Boost creep happens when your wastegate can’t bypass enough exhaust gas to maintain your target boost pressure.

Even with the wastegate fully open, too much exhaust energy continues flowing through the turbine, causing the turbo to spin faster and boost pressure to keep climbing as engine RPM and exhaust flow increase.

⚠️ The important part: Boost creep isn’t necessarily a bad wastegate or a tuning issue. Sometimes the wastegate passage simply doesn’t have enough flow capacity to control the turbo.

Bigger isn’t always better, and neither is more boost!

10/15/2026

💨 INTERNAL vs. EXTERNAL WASTEGATES — What’s the difference?! 👀

Both do the same basic job: control boost pressure by allowing exhaust gas to bypass the turbine wheel. But HOW they accomplish that is a little different!

🔧 Internal Wastegate: Built directly into the turbo’s turbine housing. Compact, simple, and cost-effective, but limited by the size and flow capacity of the internal bypass passage.

🔥 External Wastegate: A separate valve mounted in the exhaust system. Typically offers greater flow capacity, more flexibility in sizing and placement, and better boost control in high-performance applications.

⚠️ Here’s the catch: An external wastegate isn’t automatically better! Proper sizing, placement, and exhaust flow are what really matter.

And when your wastegate can’t bypass enough exhaust? That’s when you can run into BOOST CREEP! 📈

Which setup are you running? 👇
