Fall plans worth circling: the 32nd Durango Autumn Arts Festival takes over historic Second Avenue downtown Sept. 19–20, 2026.

Make a simple weekend out of it: spend your days strolling a juried fine-arts lineup (plus the Durango Arts Center’s community vibe), then come back to Junction West Durango Riverside Resort for a relaxing riverside evening along the Animas River—about 15 miles north of downtown. Early-autumn days + cozy campfires (when permitted) = a pretty great combo.

Festival pro tip: check the Durango Arts Center’s channels for the latest schedule, silent auction details, and ways to volunteer.

Thinking about making it a weekend? Check availability at Junction West for Sept. 19–20 and keep your home base by the river.

Fall mornings don’t get better than hot air balloons over the Animas Valley.

The 10th annual Animas Valley Balloon Rally is back Friday–Sunday, October 16–18, 2026—and it’s completely free (no tickets required). Expect crisp sunrise launches, glowing balloons after dark, and some of the most photo-worthy views of the season.

Quick weekend plan:
Friday (dusk, ~6–7:30 p.m.) – Balloon Glow at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad depot, 479 Main Ave
Saturday (8–8:30 a.m.) – Mass Ascension at Hermosa Meadows Launch Field, 373 Hermosa Meadows Rd
Saturday (9–10 a.m.) – Free children’s tethered balloon rides at Hermosa Meadows
Saturday (6–8 p.m.) – Downtown Balloon Glow at the depot
Saturday (7–9 p.m.) – Animas Valley drive-by glow route (starts near Dalton Ranch Country Club, 589 County Road 252, and PJ’s Gourmet Market at Trimble Crossing, 67 Trimble Lane)

Local tip: Dress warm, arrive early, and bring a flashlight for the evening glow.

If you’re turning Balloon Rally weekend into a getaway, Junction West Durango Riverside Resort makes a relaxing home base along the Animas River—choose from full-hookup RV sites, cabins, or tent sites, then head out for balloons in the morning and downtown lights at night.

One easy Durango night: riverside downtime at Junction West → Steamworks for a lively local brewpub classic.

Open daily (typically 11 a.m.–10 p.m. Sun–Wed, 11 a.m.–11 p.m. Thu–Sat). steamworksbrewing.com

Durango’s quiet winter doesn’t stay quiet for long—Snowdown turns it into a citywide costume party.

Started in 1979 by local business owners and neighbors, Snowdown was built as a tongue-in-cheek antidote to the midwinter lull—part homemade carnival, part community tradition, and 100% Durango. Every year brings a new (usually hilarious) theme, and the whole town leans in with costumes, decorated storefronts, and days packed with events.

What to know before you go:
• It typically lands in late January or early February—right when winter feels longest
• Expect a mix of family-friendly daytime fun and adults-only evening events
• Classic Snowdown vibes include a downtown parade, the Snowdown Follies variety show, and quirky contests that are proudly DIY

If you’re planning to experience Snowdown, Junction West Durango Riverside Resort makes a comfortable, scenic home base along the Animas River—about 15 miles from downtown—with RV sites, cabins, and tent sites, plus a heated pool (seasonal), game room, and a weekend café in summer.
