The river gets quieter in October, and plenty of anglers think that's the best part.

The Animas River through Durango holds Gold Medal water, and fall is a great time to fish it. There are fewer tubes and rafts, the cottonwoods along the bank are turning, and you can work a whole run without anybody else in sight.

Make sure your Colorado fishing license is current, bring layers for the chilly morning, and tell us: dry fly or nymph? 🎣

Nearly 5,000 archaeological sites. 600 cliff dwellings. And the ranger-guided tours of the big ones only have about a week left this year.🍁

Cliff Palace and Balcony House tours run through October 21, and so does the Long House area on Wetherill Mesa. If Mesa Verde's been on your list, this is the week.

πŸ‚Leave early, pack water and a warm layer, and give it a whole day. Those canyon-wall villages are one of the best things you can see in Southwest Colorado.

Today's the last day of full hookup camping for 2026.

To the RV crew who made this season: the full-timers, the weekenders, the ones who came back three times, and the new friends who found us this year. Thank you. You're the reason the canyon felt like a neighborhood.

Drop your favorite moment from this season below. We'd love to see it. 🚐

Every fall road trip has one: the person who yells "PULL OVER" at every single aspen.

Our standard is a lot looser. If one more gold hillside makes the whole car go quiet, we're pulling over.

Tag the person who makes you stop 14 times between Durango and Silverton. πŸ‚πŸ“Έ

Two ways to see the San Juans up close this fall. You only get to pick one this weekend.

πŸš‚ Let the Durango & Silverton do the driving: 45 miles of track along the Animas, coffee in hand.
πŸš— Take the wheel over Coal Bank and Molas Passes on Highway 550 and pull over whenever you want.

Which one are you picking? Explain yourself in the comments.

Colorado friends, this one's got your name on it.

Book a Cottage, RV, or Tent site with code BACKYARD and save 15% as a Colorado resident. Fall is the best time to use it. The high country is turning and weeknights in the canyon are wide open.

You don't need a plane ticket to get a real mountain getaway. Just a free weekend and a full tank. πŸ”οΈ

RVers, here's your heads-up: full hookup camping runs through October 11 this season.

That gives you about ten more days on a Creek Site with 30/50 amp full hookups, your picnic table, and the creek right there. October weekdays are about as peaceful as the canyon gets.

After the 11th we shift to fall dry camping through the end of the month, so if you need water and sewer, now's the time. 🚐

The first cup at camp just tastes better. We don't make the rules.

Happy National Coffee Day from the canyon. Tell us how you brew it out here: percolator, pour-over, French press, or a gas-station cup you grabbed on the way in and zero shame about it. β˜•

And locals: which Durango coffee stop is non-negotiable on the way out of town? We're taking notes.

It's National Public Lands Day, and around here that's pretty much everything past the campground sign.

The San Juan National Forest wraps around Durango, and Perins Park State Wildlife Area is right in the neighborhood too. Trails, birds, big quiet. That land belongs to all of us, so we all get to take care of it.

Our three rules for a good day out there: pack out what you pack in, stay on the trail, and leave the wildflowers and the rocks where you found them. 🌲

Tell us your favorite spot of public land in Southwest Colorado. πŸ‘‡
