Instead of a liquid electrolyte, a solid state battery uses a ceramic solid electrolyte. The basic structure is similar to lithium-ion batteries, but since no flammable liquid is used inside, the battery pack can be lighter, safer, and more compact. This technology is not new. In fact, solid-state batteries have been used in pacemakers and smart watches for years. They are safer to use and cheaper to produce, while allowing for faster charge times and greater range.
Solid-state batteries take only 15 minutes to reach 80% charge and are less stressful to charge for multiple cycles. While lithium-ion batteries begin to degrade after 1,000 cycles, solid-state batteries maintain 90% of their capacity after 5,000 recharges. So far, the problem with using solid-state battery packs in electric vehicles has been applying the technology to large-scale applications. But that, too, is changing.
