Ice scraper still buried in the garage from last March?

Good week to stock the trunk. NHTSA's winter list:
Snow shovel, broom and ice scraper
Sand or kitty litter for traction
Jumper cables, a flashlight and warning flares or markers
A first aid kit
Blankets
A phone charger, water, food and any medicine you need

NHTSA also says to have a mechanic check your battery, charging system and belts.

IDOT and IDNR say more than 40 percent of Illinois deer crashes happen in October, November and December, and November is the highest-risk month.

Their advice:
Slow down when you see one. Others could be following.
Scan the shoulders for eye shine.
If a hit can't be avoided, don't veer into oncoming traffic or off the road.

Already met one? Even a glancing hit can take out a headlight, damage parts of the cooling system or knock the alignment off.

Everybody has a theory about warming up the car.
Ten minutes in the driveway. Twenty. Remote start and a second cup of coffee.

Our Mechanics Corner article says modern engines don't need it.
About 30 seconds lets the oil circulate. Then scrape the windows and drive gently until it warms up.

The exception is visibility. If the defroster needs a few more minutes to clear the glass, give it the minutes.

Coolant is antifreeze.
The name gives away half the job.

The other half is keeping the engine from overheating, all year long.

NHTSA's winter checklist says to make sure you have enough coolant and that it meets your manufacturer's specifications.
Check the system for leaks. Test the coolant.

Sweet smell after a drive? A puddle under the front end? Temperature gauge acting different than it did in July?
