What are the differences between the MICHELIN Pilot Sport 5 and the MICHELIN Pilot Sport 5 Energy?

Let’s focus on four key testing results that are most relevant for daily driving, drawn from TÜV SÜD’s performance tests and DEKRA’s tread‑wear tests
Wet Braking
The PS5 stopped in 25.6m compared to 27.8m for the PS5 Energy , a 2.2m advantage
Dry Braking
In dry braking, the PS5 Energy stopped marginally shorter at 34.8 m versus 35.1 m. This may be linked to its lower starting tread depth (less tread movement generally helps dry braking)
Rolling Resistance
Rolling resistance (kg/t) measures how much force a tyre needs to keep the car moving. Lower values improve efficiency for both EVs and petrol vehicles boosting EV range and reducing fuel consumption. With the PS5 Energy rated at 6.5 kg/t versus 7.9 kg/t for the standard PS5, drivers can expect noticeably better efficiency over the tyre’s lifetime.
Tread Wear
IDEKRA’s 7,712 km convoy test showed the PS5 Energy losing 901 g of rubber across all four tyres, while the standard PS5 lost 1,138 g ,roughly 26% more.
Even so, the projected tread life was nearly the same, with the PS5 lasting only about 101 km longer. The likely reason is a higher initial tread depth on the PS5, giving it a slightly longer path to the wear thresholds despite its faster wear rate.
The Pilot Sport 5 Energy does give up a bit of wet grip as the standard PS5 stops shorter in the wet and feels more responsive in wet handling.
But the gap is far smaller than what is usually see from energy‑focused tyres. In dry braking, both tyres are essentially equal, tread life is practically the same, and the rolling‑resistance improvement is genuinely impressive.
